9 in 10 victims lived in a seniors ‘ residence

9 victimes sur 10 vivaient dans une résidence pour aînés

If the balance sheet of deaths from the coronavirus is high in Quebec, it is in large part because of the bloodshed in several residences for seniors.

“We live currently, in Quebec, as if there were two worlds. On one side, it has the very difficult situation in NURSING homes, then on the other side, well, there is a situation that is relatively stable “, was recognized Wednesday, the prime minister François Legault.

Looking at the statistics on the places where dwelt those who have lost their lives, one finds that 87 % of victims were living in a CHSLD, a private seniors ‘ residence or an intermediate resource. In contrast, very few were at home before their death.

For example, in the region of the Capitale-Nationale, only 2 of the 34 victims were living at home. In Laval, the Laurentians and the eastern Townships, it is less than 10 % of them.

Methodology

  • The national Institute of public health classifies deaths according to place of residence at the time of death, and not the place where the death occurred. Take the case of, for example, a resident in a CHSLD. Even if he died in the hospital after having been transferred for a few days, it falls into the category of victims of the COVID-19 residing in a CHSLD.
  • 82 victims of the COVID-19 are not represented in our map. Twenty-two of them were in a hospital as a place of residence, and 60 had a place of residence listed as “other” or “unknown” by Quebec.

The balance of the day

  • Case in the world : 2 624 846
  • Death in the world : 183 120
  • In Canada : 41 650
  • Cases in Quebec : 20 965 (+839 relative to Tuesday)
