A fire at the Airbus Helicopters site in Vitrolles

Since 6 am, this Sunday morning in Vitrolles, 80 marine firefighters from Marseille and firefighters from Bouches-du-Rhône have been fighting a fire on the Airbus Helicopters site. The fire is now under control and almost extinguished.

This Airbus Helicopter site is a military site. Big fear this morning, because the warehouse which burned down is intended for the surface treatment of metals and therefore contains toxic products, especially acids. This is a 5,000 m2 warehouse used for the production of mechanical parts for helicopters.

“No trace of toxicity in the air”

A priori, no hazardous material has burned. In any case, the atmospheric samples taken by the firefighters this Sunday noon do not show “no trace of toxicity in the air”. According to the firefighters, no need to worry so, if you live nearby.

The origin of the fire is not known. The material damage is not yet known either but there will certainly be an impact on the production site, and maybe technical unemployment for employees. Airbus Helicopters is one of the largest employers in the region.
