The San Diego Padres qualified for the major league playoffs on Sunday night.
They will therefore play baseball in October for the first time since the 2006 season. Since its founding in 1969, the California club have made the playoffs on only six occasions.
The 2020 edition of the Padres qualified thanks to a victory of 7 to 4 in the eleventh inning against the Seattle Mariners. Mitch Moreland, Jurickson Profar and Trent Grisham produced the three points that made the difference in the third overtime.
The Padres then had to return to defense. Pitcher Trevor Rosenthal (1-0) forced his first two opponents to kick balls. He then finished the job by passing Phillip Ervin in the mitten.
With six games to go in their regular season, the Padres are 34-20 and sit second in the Western Division of the National League. They are four games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.
