A novel with two stories

A novel with two stories

If she became known with a novel called Miniaturist , the British author Jessie Burton writes great novels. My mother's secrets are proof of that.

With this third novel for adults by Jessie Burton, we are entitled to a bit of two in one. Under its blanket adorned with a large green rabbit hide indeed not one, but two very distinct stories: one which takes place in the early 1980s and the other which begins in 2017.

The first introduces Elise Morceau, a 20-year-old waitress pretty enough to also serve as a living model for the students of the famous Royal College of Art in London. A detail, because the most important happens: on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, while walking in the park of Hampstead Heath, Elise will meet Constance Holden, a 36-year-old writer whose first novel was a huge success. Hollywood even bought the adaptation rights and when Constance is called to Los Angeles for the shoot, Elise will not hesitate to follow her.

A mother's past

As for the second story, it features Rose Simmons, 34 years old. Who is also a coffee waitress, but not for long. With her partner Joe, she plans to start selling burritos in a food truck very soon. Except that recently, everything is not so clear. After years of trying to find out more about her mother, who abandoned her shortly after her birth, Rose will finally discover the name of the last person to have seen her: yes, Constance Holden! An author who is now forgotten by almost everyone and who perhaps wants things to stay that way …

A beautiful novel served by a very pretty pen.

In an ideal world, it is better to have read the three previous opus of the series devoted to the investigations of Commissioner Richard Oppenheimer before starting this one. Not only because they are really worth it ( Germania is simply excellent!), But because they are so well documented that they give us a very good idea of what the daily life of Berliners could have looked like in the past. hours of the Third Reich. Or even after, this tome set in 1946.

A killer in the city

Still not regretting being a cop, Oppenheimer now works on the American side of the city, at the German Search Service. As one in four Germans are actively sought after (by their relatives or by the Allies!), Let's say that they don't really have time to be bored. And unfortunately for him, things will not get better when corpses covered with alphabetic signs start popping up all over town. Because obviously, it is to him that we will call upon to find the killer at the origin of all these murders.

To read without fail, especially if you loved the Bernie Gunther series by Philip Kerr.

Well. We must admit that with such a title, it is not really difficult to guess what subjects will be covered in this little book. So yes, it will be a question of composition, quantity, frequency, color or smell. But not only. Also looking at the ways in which droppings have been disposed of over the centuries, it offers us an amazing lesson in history and sociology.
