After Derek Jeter, another alumnus of the New York Yankees, Alex Rodriguez, could become the owner of a team in major league baseball.
The magazine Variety has reported on Monday evening that Rodriguez and his fiancée Jennifer Lopez have appointed the bank JPMorgan Chase to raise capital that will be used to make an offer for the New York Mets.
“A-Rod” had already been mentioned in the show The Tonight Show Jimmy Fallon, during the month of march, that he would consider the idea of buying the team if the opportunity presented itself.
The family Wilpon, who currently owns the team, has already tried to sell 80% of the shares of the team to Steven Cohen, managing director of the important investment fund SAC Capital Advisors, in the month of December. An agreement of $ 2.6 billion was tied up, but Cohen has withdrawn because of a clause which would allow Wilpon to keep control of the franchise for five years.
In 22 seasons in major league baseball, including 12 with the Yankees, Rodriguez has hit 696 circuits and maintained a batting average of ,295. He has been named three times as the outstanding player in the american League and won the world Series in 2009 with the Bombers in the Bronx.
Jeter, for his part, holds 4 % of the shares of the Marlins of Miami, and occupies the functions of president of the club.
