I never thought much of honey when I was little, it was always there in our panties, sitting sweetly in its bear-shaped bottle. I had no idea what it meant for honey to be “raw”, or the variety of health and wellness benefits that came with it. To be totally honest, I really don’t even What honey. But just when my eyes were opened to the beauty of chardonnay when I finally tasted a decent one, soaking in local honey in its purest form completely elevated my taste and wellness game.
Honey isn’t just a sweet substance that won’t leave you with a sugar hangover, it’s practically medicinal in its antibacterial and healing nature. It’s a complex sensory treatment that might even cure your acne.
With my eyes finally open to the wonders of pure, raw honey, I suddenly had a million questions about how to buy it, what to do with it, and how to support a creature that, frankly, is into a little trouble. I tapped on two experts, Maya feller, registered dietitian and nutritionist, and Carla Marina Marchese, founder of the American Honey Tasting Society and co-author of The connoisseur of honey, to cover everything from honey skincare and reading labels to whether or not manuka honey is worth the price (spoiler: it totally is). And for a little more sweetness, we’ve rounded up some must-have honey recipes, so you can enjoy good things in all their forms.

Analyzing the Natural Wellness Benefits of Honey for …
Honey is a prebiotic that essentially feeds the good bacteria (or probiotics) in your gut. Y a healthy and balanced gut is a happy gut.
Honey’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory powers make it the perfect ingredient for DIY mask or facial cleanser. “Raw honey has been used for centuries as an aid in wound healing. The antimicrobial and antiseptic properties found in honey support the healing process, ”says Feller.
Although honey is made from sugar, there is a fairly uniform amount of glucose (which is already in your body) and fructose (which is naturally found in fruit). Your body digests the combination of sugar in honey much more slowly than refined white sugar, helping you avoid a sugar crash. “And the thing is, when you really start to taste honey, the sugar is just sweet,” says Marchese. “Honey has flavor, it is acidic, bitter, woody. It is much more complex. “
For instant allergy relief, nothing works better than a teaspoon of honey. “It covers your throat. It’s like a hug for your throat. There’s really nothing scientific about why it helps, but it feels really good, “says Marchese. “It doesn’t remove or cure anything, but there is something about honey that really makes you feel better about allergies.”
General Antibacterial Needs
Now for a little science lesson: Marchese points to honey’s chemical makeup – essentially sugar, water, and the healthy enzymes that bees put in it – for its antibacterial powers. The better the quality of the honey, the more powerful the benefits. “Honey is very acidic and has a low PH. If there are bacteria in the throat and you cover it with honey, a certain amount will die, ”says Marchese. “Honey is also supersaturated and absorbs much of the moisture from the air. If you put honey on a wound, it will suck up the water and smother the bacteria. “
How to buy the real raw deal
The demand for honey far exceeds what can currently be produced in the United States. (Marchese estimates that we can only produce about 1/3 of what we need.) To compensate for this, a lot of honey is imported, which means that much of it is pasteurized, a heating process that can filter out healthy pollen and enzymes.
The easiest way to find good quality honey is to stop by a farmers market or visit a local beekeeper. That way, you know it was bottled near the source and has never been tampered with.
Read your labels
Like green washing in skincare, the use of the words “raw” and “organic” on food labels is a deeply unregulated practice. Sadly, the most beautiful, thoughtful-looking packaging doesn’t always guarantee you’ll get the best sweet stuff. A good plan of action, as we mentioned earlier, is to check where the honey is made.
“The country of origin must be indicated on the label. Ideally, you want it to be made in the USA, ”says Marchese. “Even better: find honey made in a small town by a family or a local beekeeper. That is the best “.
Most commercial brand honey can also be cut with other ingredients or synthetic sweeteners. Verify that the ingredient is simply “honey”.

All about the bottle
Ideally, honey would be bottled in glass containers, but that can be expensive. And since many American beekeepers are hobbyists, investing in glass is not always an option.
“I know a lot of beekeepers are making really good honey, but they put it in plastic,” says Marchese. “You can buy excellent honey in plastic, but don’t leave it in your pantry for more than a year.”
Location, location, location
We know that checking where your honey was made is one of the best ways to make sure you’re getting the good stuff, but where is the best bottled? “I would go with Italy,” says Marchese. “People always comment on how wonderful tomatoes, wine or bread are in Italy, and it is because they take care of the environment. They take care of the soil and do not spray prohibited chemicals. We have good honey here, but European countries like Italy, Spain and France may have the best. “
Other tips to help bees
You may not have the time (or space, or courage) to become an ethical beekeeper. Fair enough! How else can you be of help? “Support your local beekeepers. Many of them do this as an additional hobby because they really like bees and want to help the environment, ”says Marchese. “Supporting them rewards their general love for caring for an animal.”

Is Manuka Honey All It Appears To Be?
When I think of Manuka honey, I think of amazing prices at Whole Foods and one of my favorites. scenes of Wide city.
