More than 150 American chefs and restaurateurs this week signed an open letter calling for votes for Democrat Joe Biden for the presidential election, accusing Donald Trump of ruining the restaurant industry by his handling of the pandemic.
“The Trump administration has reacted no matter what to the pandemic,” and because of it, “our industry expects to lose $ 240 billion by the end of the year, with a lot of restaurants and small establishments under financial infusion ”, say the signatories of this open letter.
“Throughout the crisis, the restaurant industry begged the government for support,” they said. “But at every turn, the president has missed the boat,” they add, before concluding by calling for a vote for his rival.
When contacted, Joe Biden's campaign team did not immediately provide the list of signatories. But according to the specialist magazine Eater, it has more than 150 chefs and restaurateurs, including the very media Elizabeth Falkner, pastry chef Duff Goldman, New York chef and cookbook author Anita Lo, or Nina Compton, of the restaurant Compère Lapin. in New Orleans.
Some, like Elizabeth Falkner, very active on Twitter, were already participating in culinary events to raise funds for the campaign of the former vice-president of Barack Obama.
The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the restaurant and hospitality industries hard. In many cities, including New York and Los Angeles, restaurants are still prohibited from reopening, except on the terrace.
New York has authorized theaters to reopen on September 30, but at only 25% capacity, as is the case in Chicago.
A recent study by the New York City Hospitality Alliance of New York City Hospitality Alliance found that nearly nine in ten restaurants (87%) could no longer pay their rent in full.
