Testing of experimental fuel assemblies on the basis of Russian so-called tolerant nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants can pass on one of the power units of the Rostov nuclear power plant. It is reported by RIA “Novosti”, referring to materials on public procurement of the state Corporation “Rosatom”.
According to this evidence, national research centre “Kurchatov Institute” will perform works on substantiation of safety of application in the Rostov NPP experimental fuel assemblies in a “tolerant” version. Their primenenie is believed to help prevent severe accidents at nuclear power plants.
On Thursday, the fuel company of Rosatom TVEL announced that the first phase of reactor tests of Russian tolerant nuclear fuel was successful. These tests are based on research reactor MIR in the enterprise of Rosatom “Scientific-research Institute of atomic reactors” (RIAR, Dimitrovgrad, Ulyanovsk region). In the MIR reactor for advanced fuel elements created the conditions as close to operating conditions and the parameters of heat carriers, the energy of water-water reactors of the Russian WWER and foreign PWR, used in nuclear power plants.
On the basis of data obtained after the first phase of testing will determine the optimal combination of sheath materials and also to perform calculations and justification of neutron-physical characteristics of active zones of water-water reactors. The next important step will be loading in the reactor of a Russian nuclear power plant experienced fuel assemblies with a separate fuel elements in a “tolerant” version, it is planned for 2020.
It should be noted that in the world are actively working on the creation of a tolerant nuclear fuel (accident tolerant fuel) that is resistant to accidents with loss of coolant.
