Austrian ÖBB plans to expand its network of night routes in Europe together with DB and SBB.
Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) in cooperation with Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and Deutsche Bahn intends to expand its route network of night trains, one of them can be run from Zurich to Barcelona and the other from Berlin to Brussels.
This writes the CTS with reference to the Neue Zürcher Zeitung.
According to the head of the ÖBB Andreas Mathis, yet a final decision on two specified routes, but the company is conducting active negotiations with Swiss and German colleagues. “We can submit a restart the night train between Zurich and Barcelona. In Germany it will be a night train between Berlin and Brussels,” said Mathis.
Their plans to increase the number of ÖBB previously confirmed by the order of the company Siemens 13 new trains night trains that will be operated by 2022. However, if the joint routes with SBB confirmed, the Austrian railway company need to order additional trains. This means that the route Zurich-Barcelona can be started no earlier than 2023.
As noted by the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, ÖBB is the largest operator of night trains in the EU. In 2016, the company acquired the business operation of such trains from the Deutsche Bahn, driving the routes between Germany and Switzerland. In January the company will launch a night train on the route Vienna-Brussels. Also, as already mentioned CTS in December 2020 will run a night train from Vienna to Amsterdam.
In the ÖBB note that one of the factors of the Renaissance night passenger railway transport is an environmental aspect. “The discussion about climate will not go away, time is on our side”, Andreas said Mathis, speaking about the demand for such trains in the next years.
