In a 7-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles Sunday in Buffalo on the final day of Major League Baseball's regular schedule, the Toronto Blue Jays finished eighth in the American League and will face the Tampa Bay Rays in the first round.

The Jays could hope for the fifth place by edging out the New York Yankees in the Eastern section. But even if the Bronx Bombardiers suffered a 5-0 loss to the Miami Marlins, the Canadian team had to defeat the Orioles to progress.

The Yankees, for their part, have a date with the Cleveland Indians. They overtook the Chicago White Sox in Central, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-6 and taking advantage of the Sox's 10-8 loss in their duel of the day against the Cubs.

The Minnesota Twins, for their part, slipped behind the Oakland Athletics, who finished the season third and second respectively.

The Twins had to admit defeat 5-3 against the Cincinnati Reds in the 10th inning. The Oakland Athletics, for their part, had the advantage 6-2 against the Seattle Mariners. If both clubs finish with an identical 36-24 record, the A's have the upper hand in the tiebreaker, a better record against clubs in the same section.

The A's must now face the White Sox. The Twins will, for their part, be opposed to the Houston Astros.

The Phillies and the Giants fail

In the Nationale, the Philadelphia Phillies (5-0 loss to the Rays) and San Francisco Giants (5-4 loss to the San Diego Padres) were unable to take advantage of the Brewers' backhand. from Milwaukee (5-2 against the St. Louis Cardinals) to sneak into the playoffs.

The Brewers, eighth, will face the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Cardinals (fifth), the Padres. Consequently, the Reds, seventh, have an appointment with the Atlanta Braves and the Marlins (sixth), with the Chicago Cubs.
