Brains active: a book-game for all

Cerveaux actifs: un livre-jeu pour tous

In these times of confinement, the games are more popular than ever. To change ideas and have fun, of course, but also to continue to work amount of little grey cells. The book Brains active, which offers 285 stimulating games, therefore, could not come at a better time.

“I have extensive training in cognitive psychology (the study of mental processes such as how people learn things, holding things, etc) and, in parallel, I am also a fan of the games,” explains its author, Gilles Bergeron.

Combining these two passions, he has created in 2017, the program of group workshops, Brains assets, which is primarily intended for people 55 years of age, and more concerned to maintain their cerebral faculties. “The brain is an organ that ages like the other, and this is not because we sometimes forget our keys or the name of someone that you have Alzheimer’s,” continues Gilles Bergeron. But to prevent cognitive loss, it has been shown that keeping your brain active, it increases our chances to maintain health longer. For the workshops that I lead, so I developed a bunch of exercises and games, brainstorming. The book Brains active is the result of this work. ”

Bet on the variety

Shadow games, logic problems, puzzles, riddles, word search, puzzles, quotes, secret games of the seven errors, words intruder… You can not say that it is lack of choice !

“Exactly, Brains active are distinguishable from other books of the genre by the variety of its games, exclaimed Gilles Bergeron. Usually, one will find that between one and five types of different games, but in mine, there are close to forty, which enables people to exercise more faculties : their memory, their concentration, their creativity, their sense of observation, their logical reasoning, their concentration, spatial perception, etc”

The author adds that in order to really work our brain, it is necessary to give priority to activities that require us to develop new strategies. “From one person to another, there can be big differences,” he stressed. For some, invert an image from left to right will claim, for example, no special effort, while for others, this will be quite difficult. In order to work their brain, they will have to go to the spatial tasks. In the same way, if one makes sudokus regularly, there will be more large-thing to learn. But if you try a game we have never played, we’ll have to integrate its rules, its methods, and to develop strategies to arrive at the solution. It is the resolution of problems in a broad sense. ”

Bitten in the game !

For Gilles Bergeron, the main challenge has been quite different : to offer activities that appeal to both the young and the less young. “It has led me to eliminate the quiz and to focus on the games that do not ask for specific knowledge in mathematics, science, geography or history, he says. It also pushed me to find the right level of difficulty so that the games are neither too easy, nor too difficult. “In short, this is stimulating for all.

But as he recalls, the prime objective of this book is to give us a good time. “It is sure that play promotes brain activity,” he concludes. But it is the games enthusiast who has designed, not the specialist in cognitive psychology. Then all the games Drain the assets are mostly there to entertain ! As I know quite a bit about the brain, however, I added many capsules of information that help explain its operation, or which déboulonnent several myths. I am, for example, always surprised to hear people ask if it is true that we only use 10% of our brain. There is no way to measure the percentage used, but all parts of the brain are used. “And with this book, you will see 285 times rather than one !
