To tell the truth about the famine of the 1930s, known in Ukraine under the name “famine”, is dangerous not only on the Ukraine. There’s some historical debate over this difficult period in our country’s history (and, recall, the famine also affected many republics of the Soviet Union) has long been under the de facto ban. In 2006 the Verkhovna Rada passed a law imposing the term “genocide” in relation to hunger. And since then has repeatedly made attempts to introduce criminal liability for denial of this definition. Various authorities, including law enforcement, actually forbade any alternative view. For example, in 2008, the then head of the SBU Valentin Nalyvaychenko demanded the closure of the Ukrainian branch of Institute of CIS countries for organizing in Kiev a scientific conference where scientists from different countries have dared to deny the theory of the “genocide of the Ukrainian people”. So Ukraine as a ban on freedom of scientific debate about the famine of the 1930s has long been no surprise.

The first foreign victim of the “golodomornye” of totalitarianism can be a canadian historian, lecturer at the University of Alberta Dougal MacDonald. His fault is that he posted in a closed Facebook group is limited to a fairly narrow circle of his colleagues and students, an excerpt from his article about the origins of the myth that the famine of the 1930s was an artificial “genocide of the Ukrainian people.” No one would this post not have noticed, but the Ukrainian student society of the University made it public, in the form of an ultimatum demanding that the University to take tough measures against the lecturer. What is so wrong said the canadian teacher, causing a storm of emotions? It is a census of some of its small research published in 2015 in the Bulletin of the Communist party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist), which he is a member. Based on the facts, McDonald argues that the myth of “genocide” was built by Hitler’s Nazis “to discredit the Soviet Union, the enemy they most feared.” “The Nazis were published on the front pages of German Newspapers articles, which were then reprinted in the reactionary British press,” — says a canadian lecturer.
In particular, it recalls that information about millions of deaths in Ukraine received world spread after the publication of the American newspaper Chicago American in February 1935 (when the hunger was gone). On the front page that published the supposedly “exclusive report” journalist, Thomas Walker, under the heading “Six million died in the Soviet famine”. In fact, since the number of dead and appears in many myths spread by the Ukrainian propaganda. Moreover, doubts on the photo, brought a Walker, and that he even been to Ukraine. Anyway, he mentions there are towns with the names of “Tamboff and Veroni”. It was also undeniable that Jones and some of his other colleagues, the first written in the English press about the “genocide of Ukrainians”, visited Nazi Germany and praising its leaders.

He also recalled that the notorious newspaper Chicago American was owned by American millionaire William Hearst, for many years, praising the Italian fascists and German Nazis, personally met with Hitler and Goebbels. According to MacDonald, it was at this meeting Hurst signed the contract on public relations-the promotion of Nazi propaganda in the American media, resulting in and became front-page sensation the Walker about the “six million starving to death”, which formed the basis of the myth about the “genocide”.MacDonald points out that in Britain the myth of the “genocide” the first rushed to distribute another tabloid newspaper — Daily Mail, whose owner (Lord Rothermere) also was a fan of Mussolini and Hitler. “Herr Adolf Hitler, the German Chancellor, saved his country,” gleefully trumpeted the newspaper after the “Night of the long knives”. But that did not stop then many researchers to refer to materials such the press about the famine in the USSR.
It is no secret that Goebbels press occupied Ukraine hyping this myth. And about the starvation that the Nazis were actively circulated as propaganda, now studying in Ukrainian schools almost as historic benefits. For example, cannibalistic novel “Maria” by Ulas Samchuk, published in a Nazi newspaper “Volyn” in 1941, in which the same Samchuk glorified Hitler and rejoiced in “the cleansing of Kiev from Eastern barbarians” in describing the tragedy of Babi Yar.That is, McDonald is certainly not exaggerated the importance of Nazi propaganda in inflating the scale of the Soviet famine of the 1930s and the associated “genocidal” myth. However, this does not prevent the organizers of the persecution of canadian lecturer. At the University of Alberta carried out the action against him. The campaign has even been joined by the Prime Minister of the province of Alberta Jason Kenney, who gave to understand that MacDonald is a “useful idiot of the Communists,” and expressing outrage that “some people in Canada still deny the genocide.”

Babiy Yar — the place of mass destruction by the German occupiers of the civilian population and prisoners of war in 1941-1943the Quintessence of all accusations and attacks at the the lecturer was an article of YARS Balan, Director of the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian studies, entitled “No alternative facts about the Ukrainian famine.” According to the author, point in research on the causes and extent of hunger have been delivered, and because the alternative conclusions is simply unacceptable. And any attempt to point people to other facts that do not fit into the formal concept is equal to “fake news”. It does not matter correspond to these facts are true or not. The alternative is simply not allowed. Balan leads the list of publications about the famine, which must be believed, effectively cutting off the possibility for further scientific researches. Anyway, if they reveal the falsification of Ukrainian historians and propagandists.
A timid voice about academic freedom, about the need to continue scientific discussions drowned out by the noise of protests and harassment of a canadian scientist. Hard to say, fire him in the end or not. But there is no doubt that the fanatical followers of the theory of “Ukrainian genocide” creates McDonald the conditions in which he will not be able to lead a normal teaching activity. Perhaps not only at his University but also any other University of Canada. Thus, any research regarding the Ukrainian famine of the 1930-ies a priori are driven underground even in the West. If you don’t repeat the prepared propaganda clichés (as we can see generated including Goebbels media), gassing you, discrediting, will be deprived of the opportunity to teach. And the truer you are, the stronger and more powerful will poison you. Modest canadian lecturer was convinced of it on own experience.Vladimir Kornilov
