Catherine Fouron doesn’t hide it : to continue feeding her blog for eight years, she has also cultivated his sleep disorder.
If the insomniacs are having fun, they also write. And the insomnia has been for Catherine Fouron a condition that has freed his prose during his many sleepless nights, until a little in spite of her adventure lead her to publish a novel — his first — in bookstores since November 14.
Through some 300 pages of his Journal of an insomniac, the writer made a dialogue between a woman “without a face” with the hamster in his head, as the saying goes. Guy — it is, as it is nicknamed — trouble his sleep with his thousand and one questions, a little like a parent inside, or a “superego” environment, to borrow from freudian theory.
The adventure of this novel begins in 2010 when Catherine Fouron has published in a blog on its first texts of fiction, written in favor of the white nights which are multiplying. The quarantine, the children, the divorce with her first husband : it’s a real “whirlwind” that sucks snatching the little rest that remains to him. A fuel for his hamster… and his imagination.
“It has been a year where I spent a lot of time alone with this sadness,” she says in an interview with The Duty in a café in the neighborhood of Côte-des-Neiges, in Montreal. I remember very well that afternoon, I said to myself : “well, I’m not staying to do anything in my room, I’m going to create a blog and I’ll publish my notes. It is going to take me.””
Catherine Fouron, therefore, has, by his own admission, benefited from this unwanted guest to start writing, échafaudant this character that can be found in the Diary of an insomniac.
If the author has delved into his imagination to draw the features of this woman ” no strings attached “, she concedes that, on the merits, this book — like the blog — inspired by his own experiences. “I have knitted a world around my story. I have not lived all those nights of fantasy. It is an extrapolation of my own thoughts, in a universe night a little uninhibited “, taking care to specify, a smile in the voice.
Source of inspiration
Catherine Fouron doesn’t hide it : to continue feeding her blog for eight years, she has also cultivated his sleep disorder. Is this to say that, if the insomnia was one day invited into her bedroom, there would have been no blog ? Not only that, but even less a novel, she points behind her cup of still hot.
“It is so pernicious that, for eight years, I’m still insomniac,” she says. I carry in my wallet a reference to go visit in a sleep clinic and I never wanted to go there because, if I did that, it is as if I killed my inspiration. “
As well, the young woman feeds its blog from its poetry night for a few years. The idea of doing a novel, it crosses certainly the spirit, but she admits that the “courage to make the approach from a publisher” to him has been lacking for a long time. “I was dreaming a bit as we dream of something unattainable. “At least, until recently.
It took the call of Marie-Chantal Gariépy, friend, loyal reader of the blog and literary director at Head first, for that it embraces the project ; a project that Catherine Fouron conducted for a year and a half, juggling the writing, the full-time work and children in shared custody.
Source of healing
To write this novel, the author has “cleared” tickets ” on his blog, has added new, more of a sprinkle here and there of short descriptions to compose a narrative.
I remember very well that afternoon, I said to myself: “well, I’m not staying to do anything in my room, I’m going to create a blog and I’ll publish my notes. It is going to take me”
But isn’t it challenging to dive into these episodes difficult in the past ? “No, hastened to reply. It has allowed me to really see the progress made. “” The blog was written more in moments of sadness, of guilt. There, I was in a state of mind much more serene. I really had the impression to speak in the name of a character. And now, I sleep ! “
Guy her card-now the peace — or almost —, but do not believe that it remisera paper and pencil. If the sleep is income, the desire to write, she has not fainted. “The story of the insomniac is a loop with this novel. It’s going to be something else, but it is sure that I will continue to write. It will come out of my imagination, fresh and fine, since I’ll be rested ! “, she says with a laugh.
For the moment, she flirts with the idea of writing on death, a subject that would enable him to ” release stuff “. Novel, essay ? The shape is not fixed yet, but, no offense to surfers, it is complete of the blog. “It is out ! “
