BEIJING: China reported 143 new Covid-19 cases on the mainland by Aug. 9, up from 125 cases the day before, the health authority said on Tuesday.
China’s newest clusters are primarily driven by the highly transmissible Delta variant, officials said.
Among the new confirmed infections, the highest number China has reported since Jan. 20, 108 were transmitted locally, up from 94 the day before, while the rest were imported from abroad, the National Health Commission (NHC) said. ).
Most of the local infections occurred in eastern Jiangsu province and central Henan province.
The number of new asymptomatic infections was 38 compared to 39 the day before. China does not classify them as confirmed cases.
China has reported a total of 93,969 infections since the outbreak began. The number of reported deaths stood at 4,636.
