CNN: North magnetic pole is shifting faster and faster toward Russia

The North magnetic pole is slowly moved from the canadian Arctic towards Russia since 1831, but in recent time, the speed of its movement has increased dramatically. As reported by CNN, if the inversion of the magnetic field of the Earth will occur in the coming decades, people will be able to see its impact on navigation systems, satellites and communications.

CNN: северный магнитный полюс Земли всё быстрее смещается в сторону России

ReutersВ opposed to the geographic poles magnetic poles of the Earth, which is the basis of navigation systems, are actively shifted. According to CNN, the magnetic North pole is slowly moved from the canadian Arctic towards Russia since 1831, however, the recent speed of its movement in the direction of Siberia has increased dramatically and now it is approximately 55 km per year. This led the scientists ahead of time to update the world magnetic model, which is used by NATO, American and British armed forces and the civil navigation system.

The planet’s magnetic field reverses its polarity every few hundred thousand years the magnetic North pole may be at the geographic South pole. The last time this inversion of Earth’s magnetic field occurred 770 thousand years ago.

In the new study, scientists have found out that the last time the inversion process of the magnetic field took about 22 thousand years, meaning it was much longer than scientists expected. Although some experts are convinced that the inversion of Earth’s magnetic field can occur within a single human life, the scientific data do not support this theory. As CNN concludes, the strength of the magnetic field decreases by about 5% every 100 years, and signs of weakening point for the next inversion. However, find out exactly when this inversion happens, it is difficult. If the inversion of Earth’s magnetic field will happen in our lifetime, we can see its impact on navigation systems, satellites and communications. However, according to scientists, over time humanity will gradually adapt to the periods of instability of the magnetic field.
