Cosi fan tutte by Mozart was to be the production featured

Cosi fan tutte de Mozart devait être la production vedette

Not surprisingly, the Festival d’opéra de Québec cancels its tenth edition which was to be presented from 26 July to 7 August.

The decision was taken on Thursday in consultation with the board of directors and announced this morning.

“We thought and we talked about it for a long time,” said general and artistic director Grégoire Legendre, during a phone interview.

The production Cosi fan tutte by the national opera Company of Canada was to be the performance flagship of this anniversary edition.

The opera by Mozart, directed by filmmaker Atom Egoyan, was to be presented at the Grand Théâtre de Québec. Chef Bernard Labadie would have been at the helm of the Orchestre symphonique de Québec.

This production was presented in February 2019 in Toronto with the Orchestra of the company of the national opera of Canada.

“This is a production that is magnificent, and which had not been played elsewhere, and I was proud to bring that to Quebec. It is sad that we have to abandon all that for the moment “, he dropped.

Grégoire Legendre, who will leave his post in December to retire, is unable to say if this opera will be presented again in the summer of 2021.

“It could, theoretically, be carried forward. We can’t move forward on it at this time. There were already things in place for the next edition, by the new artistic director, Jean-François Lapointe “, he said.

Just as it is impossible to say if the cancellation of this edition and that of the production of The Bat of the Opéra de Québec, which was to be presented from 16 to 23 may, will have adverse effects financially on the small organization.

“There were expenses incurred and the contracts signed. I have to get myself there over the next few days. This is unexpected. It is not a balance sheet, usually, before the start of an event. There are a lot of unknown, ” said Grégoire Legendre.

His goal is to leave leaving the Festival d’opéra de Québec and the Opéra de Québec in a favorable financial situation.

“It is my priority to ensure that these two entities to be able to come back strong in the next edition and during the next season,” he said.
