The draw for the 8th round of the French Football Cup has designated opponents within their reach for clubs in the Region: the TFC will receive Niort, while Rodez will have to travel to Pau. The matches will take place on Tuesday 19 or Wednesday 20 January next.
The draw for the 8th round of the 2020-2021 French Football Cup took place this Thursday, January 7 at 5 p.m.: it only concerned the 20 Ligue 2 clubs, which will face each other on Tuesday 19 or Wednesday 20 next January.
Chance has reserved for the clubs of Occitanie opponents who seem within their reach at first sight:
the TFC (Toulouse Football Club), currently 2nd in the standings after 18 days of the championship, will have the advantage of receiving the Chamois Niortais (9th to 10 points from the Violets).
In the regular season, the Deux-Sèvres club came down on the Stadium 2-1 lawn on November 28, but Toulouse had to fight after being led 1-0 at the start of the match.
The RAF (Rodez Aveyron Football) will have to move on the field of FC Pau (Pyrénées-Atlantiques): the Aveyronnais are currently 18th in Ligue 2 and the Béarnais 19th, just 1 point behind. The match promises to be hooked, especially since at the start of the season the Ruthenians had drawn a 1-1 draw for this same trip at the end of last August.
Chance of the calendar: the second leg of the Rodez-Pau championship will be played just 3 days before, on Saturday January 16, at the Paul-Lignon Stadium in the Chef-Lieu de l’Aveyron.
The winner of this meeting (if there is one) will take a moral advantage on his opponent, before ending up for Dame Coupe … But we know that she loves surprises.
A convoluted formula
After the hazards due to the premature end of last season due to confinement, the 2020-2021 edition of the oldest French football competition is experiencing a convoluted formula this year (and it is even more complex for amateur clubs) :
- first the 20 Ligue 2 clubs will meet in the 8th round
- the 10 winners of these confrontations will then face the 20 Ligue 1 clubs in the 32nd round.
So we already know the possible opponents of our regional clubs, if they get their qualification:
- Toulouse will have to move to Bordeaux, to find the Girondins in what is usually called “the Derby of the Garonne“
- As for Rodez, he will also have to play away, on the Stade Brestois pitch.
These 2 clubs are currently in the middle of the Ligue 1 classification: Brest is 10th and Bordeaux 12th.
The matches will be played on Tuesday 9, Wednesday 10 or 11 February next.
