MANILA, Philippines – From the Olympics themselves to the expectant Filipinos, cheers erupted on social media for the first Filipino Olympic Games gold medalist.
“History. Done,” wrote the official Olympics Twitter page. “Hidilyn Diaz won the first gold medal for the Philippines!”

Filipino fans who had been monitoring the tense competition, which came down to Hidilyn’s clean and fast final lift, immediately took to social media to express their joy and send their congratulations.
Middleweight boxer Eumir Marcial, who will also compete in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, took to Instagram to congratulate Diaz.
“Congratulations Ate Hidilyn Diaz. I am speechless at this moment because of the joy I am having, ”Marcial posted in Filipino with a photo of them inside the Athletes’ Village.
A silver medalist at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Díaz was the final lifter in the event and carried a total of 224 kilograms, 97 kg snatch and an Olympic record of 127 kg clean and jerk.
Her total was just one kilo more than China’s Liao Qiuyun, who settled for silver with a total of 223 kg, while Kazakh Zulfiya Chinshanlo took bronze with a combined weight of 213 kg.

The PBA’s most successful coach, Tim Cone, also extended his congratulations to Diaz via his Twitter account.

Senator Grace Poe also congratulated Hidilyn on her victory.
“Our first Olympic gold medal was won by a woman! Congratulations Hidilyn Díaz! “Poe wrote.” The whole country is so proud of you! “
The general population of Twitter also recalled how Diaz, a sergeant in the Philippine Air Force, expressed a lack of government support in 2019.
