Italian brand “Zagato” appeared in 20-ies of the last century. Founder and designer IRO Zagato has developed an innovative for the time aerodynamic body that allowed the first models of the firm to win the race. The styling house Zagato has always done things his own way. We chose five of our favorite designs from Milan automotive designer, informs Rus.Media.
Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ
When SZ was introduced as the official Alfa model at the Geneva motor show in 1960, variations on this theme for four years was developed in the class of sports cars of small capacity. From the beautiful Giulietta SS Bertone was approved by the plant model for competition, but it was too heavy for this purpose.
However, advanced aerodynamics, 100-horsepower engine and reduced by 100 kg compared to the SS, the Giulietta SZ was allowed to reach a top speed of 200 km / h. it is Not surprising that the Giulietta SZ were successful in racing, in particular on these cars won the Targa Florio in 1962 and the 1,000 km Nurburg 1963.
Alfa Giulietta SZ was produced with two different bodies until 1962, after which it was replaced by a new sport coupe TZ on the platform of the Giulia.
Zagato has developed his first sketch of the 8V in 1952. Over the next years styling house has released a version of the Barchetta. Given the fact that we are talking about Zagato, the company never had two identical cars. Processing the front and rear parts of the body often differ, some cars had a roof in the form of “double bubble” is likely to add additional clearance. In 1955, the firm bought some 8V at Fiat and continued to produce cars in the late 50-ies.
Ferrari 250 GTZ
Zagato has worked with Ferrari almost as much as a brand existed, since 1949. Perhaps their most beautiful instance was 250 GTZ 1957. The current Director, Andrea Zagato said in 2014:
“For me it is one of the most beautiful Ferrari ever created. My father Elio, who worked closely with Fabio Luigi Brine over the styling, and I think the 250 GTZ is a masterpiece. We’ve done five cars, each of which differed in detail. I believe they still exist. More recent work included on the basis of the Testarossa FZ93, which still remains unique.”
Maserati A6G / 54
As in the case with most super exclusive exotic models A6G / 54 has left its mark different kosovomont. Pietro frua and Serafino Allemani created the beautiful shape of the car, but the Zagato, as a rule, followed his own decentration way. Aggressive version of the work of Zagato piloted Stringham moss, and even took part in races Mille Miglia in 1956.
Of the 63 conducted Maserati A6G perhaps the most interesting was the car with chassis No. 2121, equipped with a Zagato body with a “signature” roof in the form of a double bubble. There are two similar machines, however, there are reasons to doubt that this form of roof they had from birth.
These cars represent a seductive alchemy of elegance and eccentricity that characterized the products of the company in the 1950s.
Porsche Barchetta Zagato
Porsche is not the first name that comes to mind when you think about the Zagato, and this single instance will forever remain a mystery, it was completely destroyed. The car was built by order of the French racing car driver Claude Stresa in 1957.
Stores have four wins in the race aboard this product from Zagato before you smash a car with fatal consequences in February 1959. The biggest mystery lies in the fact that the car disappeared and still not found. Before a deadly race racer recalled a malfunction of the front wheel.
With the 90-ies of the firm “Zagato” turned to the design of aerodynamic bodies for well-known sports and luxury brands such as Ferrari, Bentley, etc. However, production of ultra-light and super-speeder in the “Zagato” is not abandoned, but only made less a priority.
Currently, the company “Zagato” is engaged mainly in the development of aerodynamic body kits and production “under the order” sports cars class “luxury”.
