Four times more Ontarians would have had the COVID-19

Quatre fois plus d'Ontariens auraient eu la COVID-19

Approximately 160 000 Ontarians had already contracted the COVID-19 at the end of June, more than 4 times more than the official number of cases, suggests a study unveiled by the Ontario public Health.

From 5 to 30 June, the researchers analyzed a little over 7,000 blood samples submitted to public Health laboratories for a reason unrelated to the sars coronavirus. Of the number, and 1.1 % contained antibodies associated with the disease.

This percentage is reduced to the size of the population of Ontario, so lets assume that about 160 000 Ontarians have contracted the virus during the spring. However, the number of cases officially confirmed in the laboratory as of June 30, was just 35 000.

The rate of infection also varies greatly from one region to another. He rose from 0.3% in the north of the province to 1.5 % in Toronto, which would mean that about 45 000 inhabitants of the Queen City have been contaminated to this day.

Other studies have already highlighted that the number of cases of COVID-19 detected in the laboratory under-estimate the extent of the pandemic. A study conducted in New York was estimated that approximately one in five citizens of the megalopolis had already been infected by the SARS-CoV-2 at the end of march.
