A gorilla in a zoo in Madrid attacked a guard who came to clean his enclosure and feed him on Sunday, breaking both arms and injuring her head, the zoo and emergency services said.
The 46-year-old was doing daily morning chores in an indoor area, protected by a triple door, when she came face to face with Malabo, a 29-year-old male, Madrid Zoo said in a statement.
“The zoo team managed to get the animal away and later a veterinarian team anesthetized it with a tranquilizer dart. The animal was brought to its enclosure where it calmed down, ”adds the zoo.
Police and the zoo are trying to figure out how the monkey got into the protected area.
The victim, who has worked at the zoo for 19 years, was urgently hospitalized in serious condition, emergency services said in a tweet.
The zoo said Malabo has been raised by caretakers since birth and is normally “close to caregivers”.
