Healthy Halloween Treats (And How To Keep Kids From Overdoing It!)

Can you feel it? Halloween is just around the corner and it will be here before we know it. This is great news for costume lovers, horror movie enthusiasts, and candy fanatics alike. But first, a real little talk on the subject of Halloween candy. It’s hard enough, as a grown woman, to self-regulate around the candy mountains during spooky season, so I can’t even imagine how exhilarating it must be for a child. That’s why we’ve rounded up some healthy Halloween candy options along with some simple tips to keep kids (and honestly, ourselves) from overdoing it.

Halloween candy is one of life’s greatest pleasures, but it undoubtedly affects our health. We already know how bad added sugar really is for us, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we have to eliminate it entirely. While that might work for some, for others (myself included), mindful eating can make a difference without feeling too restrictive.

After all, everyone deserves to celebrate and enjoy from time to time.

Whether you have kids or not, these healthy Halloween candy alternatives are a great way to swap out unhealthy ingredients for ones that are a little less spooky. I have included both healthier traditional Halloween treats and some lesser-known organic options. This way you can make decisions based on what you have access to, because we are all doing our best!

Read on for tips on how to keep kids from overindulging on Halloween:

Load kids up with a nutritious dinner before trick-or-treating. Once they have a belly full of healthy vegetables and protein, they will be much less likely to binge on sweets. (This also applies to the rest of the time there is candy in the house.)

Implement a candy time limit well before you go out. The worst thing you can do is unexpectedly cut a child out of his candy. Before the night begins, let them know that the treats will be leaving at a certain time so they can see it coming and can mentally prepare.

Consider asking if they will trade their candy for toys with Switch Witch. If you think your kids might be up to it, tell them that the Switch Witch will visit them while they sleep and trade half of their candy for a new toy. (Full disclosure: This worked wonderfully for one friend, but another’s son was terrified by the very idea of a witch in his house. So this can only be used on a case-by-case basis if your kid is okay with the possibility. of a lurking witch.)

Keep sweets hidden where they can’t be seen all day. You know what they say about out of sight, out of mind! If they have access to it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, it will be more difficult to monitor the intake of sweets.

Offer to exchange 10 candies for a trip to the movies or other beloved activity. If Switch Witch isn’t your environment, you can make a trade yourself!

Some of the less healthy Halloween candy options include:

  • Sweet corn
  • Jellies
  • Gummies
  • Powder
  • White chocolate
  • Butterfinger
  • Twizzlers
  • Sour patch children
