After several years of whispering and hearsay, Apple finally launched the AirTag item tracker in 2021. It was Apple’s first foray into a crowded market with competitors like Tile and Chipolo. However, a crucial feature was missing for some people: notifications when you leave an AirTag.

Fortunately, with iOS 15, Left Behind alerts are now possible for AirTags, as well as other item trackers that use AirTag technology, such as the Chipolo ONE Spot. Here’s how to turn on Left-Behind Alerts for AirTags on iPhone and iPad.

Apple occasionally offers updates for iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS as previews closed to developers or public betas. While the beta versions contain new features, they also contain pre-launch bugs that can prevent normal use of your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Mac, and are not designed for everyday use on a primary device. This is why we highly recommend staying away from developer previews unless you need them for software development and using public beta versions with caution. If it depends on your devices, wait for the final release.

And that is. Once this setting is enabled, you will receive an alert each time you leave the zone you have specified without that particular AirTag. The option to add specific locations that don’t trigger this gives you an additional layer of customization, so you can tailor it to best suit your needs.

However, do not forget that if you are sure that you have lost your AirTag or think it has been lost, be sure to put it in Lost mode. This way, you can use the entire Find My network to track where your lost AirTag is.

Questions?

As you can see, with iOS 15, it is very easy to activate abandonment alerts for AirTags on your iPhone or iPad. It’s honestly a feature I’ve wanted on AirTag since day one, so it’s nice to see it show up in a software update rather than new hardware. With abandonment alerts, AirTag once again lives up to the competition in terms of better item trackers.
