In this article on MindBodyGreen Dr. Sara Gottfried, the hormone expert and Doctor of medical Sciences at Harvard University, explains how a hormonal imbalance preventing you to lose weight.
When dealing with patients in my practice and online community, I am constantly confronted with the same comments. Basically they are:
- I follow all the rules, but I can’t seem to lose weight.
- I’m getting older and my metabolism slows down. It’s genetics. It’s getting harder to lose weight.
- Last 5 kg will not go away! Looks like I’ll have to deal with it.
- There are some foods, which is very difficult for me to accept, though I am well aware of their harm.
- You can prescribe me some medication for weight loss?
- I’ve tried everything to lose weight. Maybe I should just accept yourself as fat, what to eat, and throw, finally, things that I’m not intermeddle.
- Versatile exercises and dietary recommendations that are suitable for everyone, do not fire on me.
- I lost 2 pounds and then gained 5. It’s just awful!
Are you familiar with that complaint? If Yes, then you probably don’t know one secret: the reason you unsuccessfully struggle with their weight is the failure of hormonal background.
As a certified gynecologist and woman in one person, I’m well aware of the suffering experienced by every woman due to weight gain. I once was fat. So I had a to apply their medical knowledge to get rid of extra pounds. And now I’m ready to share my knowledge with you.
In the us contains a huge amount of hormones, but there are only 4 that are specific to the female sex, failure of which makes it impossible to lose weight.
Blocker weight loss #1: the imbalance of estrogen.
Estrogen is a female hormone that gives a woman the Breasts and hips, and is also responsible for interarticular liquid. Men also have this, but in much smaller amounts.
However, for people of both sexes there is a danger of excess of estrogen. Moreover, estrogen continues to be produced in the ovaries even after menopause.
If you have low testosterone levels, so the concentration of estrogen almost certainly exceeds the norm.
Estrogen, like other hormones, is responsible for your reaction to food, drink and other products. Because of him, women, unlike men, it becomes harder with age to lose weight.
What to do: to lower estrogen levels (and lose weight), I recommend eating about 0.5 kg of vegetables per day. Vegetable fiber helps the excretion of estrogen, so it does not circulate in your body as bad karma.
Plus, the vegetables will slightly displace meat from your diet. This is important for two reasons: first, the massive demand for meat leads to irreparable climate change; second, the rapid changes in industrial agriculture and the development of culture over the last century outpaced the development of the ability of our genes to adapt.
Simply put, our DNA is still not adapted to modern meat, and the consumption of red meat can lead to excess estrogen.
I’m not saying you have to eliminate meat altogether, but there are good arguments in favor of limiting consumption. Paleo diet is useful for some (not all) women, but it gives much better results for men.
Yet there is no credible research “for” or “against” the meat. Sorry, we have no scientific evidence that to eat meat is healthier than vegetable protein, seafood and poultry.
Blocker weight loss #2: excess insulin.
It is known that every second American is suffering some form of diabetes accompanied by obesity. If overweight, or excess fat mass in normal weight, insulin levels are disrupted, your body’s cells become insensitive to the hormone.
As a result of impaired glucose regulator, blood sugar starts jumping up and down, and fat accumulates.
What to do: There are many ways of excretion of insulin, but personally, I recommend drinking filtered water with two tablespoons of Apple cider vinegar. A study conducted in 2004, showed that consuming 2 tablespoons of Apple cider vinegar before eating a high carb diet significantly reduces the level of blood glucose in people with insulin resistance.
Of course, there are still many ways of excretion of insulin, you know that you need to give up sugar and artificial sweeteners. Remember that if you have a broken metabolism is the first sign of problems with insulin.
Blocker weight loss #3: high cortisol.
Cortisol is produced in response to stressful situations, but most of us are experiencing stress constantly. I described this problem in his books, because I think that it is a major cause of women’s struggle with their bulges. When talking about hormonal imbalance and weight gain, all roads lead to cortisol.
In theory, most of us know that excess cortisol ruins our self esteem and sense of reality, but the theory is sometimes at odds with the practice. If your body is constantly experiencing the whole range of stress hormones, it is necessary to accumulate fat reserves. And most likely they will be at the belly.
High levels of cortisol also leads to a dependence on food in General and sugar in particular. You start to abuse the cookies and semi-finished products. The result is a fat, pure and simple. And deposited in all parts of the body.
What to do: to reset the levels of cortisol, you need to stop the consumption of caffeine. Refrain from coffee, at least for a week and you will notice that began to sleep better. And in General are quieter.
If you give up caffeine completely — impossible task at first, try replacing coffee green tea. It also has caffeine. Then, if needed, can move on to white tea, and then to abandon him.
Replace the tea with hot water with lemon and pinch of Cayenne pepper. Have
consumption of one or two of these cups in the morning will stimulate the gastrointestinal tract and make your stool regular, which in turn, will promote the excretion of toxic hormones.
I know a lot more regulation of the cortisol levels, but the removal from the diet of caffeine, of course, the first thing you need to do.
Blocker weight loss #4: lack of adiponectin.
Adiponectin is a key hormone, which tells your body the need to burn fat. Encoded by the gene ADIPOQ and allocated to the fat cells, it is needed in order to regulate the level of glucose and the process of disintegration of fatty acids.
Some people have a genetic tendency to develop a smaller amount of this wonderful hormone, and unfortunately this leads to the fact that our body accumulates fat.
When it comes to resistance to weight loss, an important role is played by our brain. There is a secret communication between adipose tissue and the Central nervous system, and adiponectin is one of the chemical intermediaries in the chain. It regulates inflammatory and oxidative processes that contribute to weight gain.
What To Do
: To adjust the level of adiponectin, I recommend eating pistachios. And actually, it’s fiction: one product affect the concentration of hormone in the body as a whole!
The study, which involved 60 people with metabolic syndrome, showed that if you feed people with low adiponectin levels in the blood pistachios, its level is increasing.
Plus, improvements were evident in waist circumference, the level of fasting blood sugar, total cholesterol, LDL (the so-called “bad cholesterol”) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein.
What else increases the level of adiponectin? Intermittent fasting.
The easiest and effective way to a hunger strike and not eat at night. For men the minimum effective time of the hunger strike – 16 hours, and for women 18. This means if the last time you ate at 18:00, the following food intake in men to be held at 10:00 and the women at noon.
Except for pistachios, it is possible to eat foods with monosaturated fats — like avocado and dark chocolate.
Do not forget about exercise.
When every morning, I struggled with being overweight, obsessed with the number on the scales in the bathroom, I was trying to figure out how to get out of this hormonal chaos. As I gradually coped with the regulation of each of these hormones, this chaos was my sense.
Now my fondest wish is that you too felt the strength and was able to listen to your body. And, of course, made the right conclusions about which foods and what lifestyle will bring you the best benefit.
Understanding that stable weight loss is only possible when provided a stable hormonal background, has helped many of my patients learn to control their weight.
