A building with a condo five-storey building was engulfed in flames, in the area of Val-Belair, on Thursday evening. The building which was still under construction, has been declared a total loss.
A call has been housed in the Service of fire protection of the City of Quebec (SPCIQ) to 17h to indicate a fire broke out on the boulevard Pie-XI.
“The first firefighters arrived on scene they found that a fire covered an outside wall of the building, on five floors. It quickly rose to the alarm and were sent to fire on all floors”, says the spokesperson for the SPCIQ, Bill Noonan.
They have also had to cool down and close again, two propane tanks, everything, away from the flames to avoid the risk of explosion.
However, the fire has grown rapidly. So well, that a fourth alarm was requested, and that a code red has been given, meaning the evacuation of all firefighters who were inside the building due to the risk of collapse eminent of the structure.
“A part of the structure actually collapsed then. [We spent] on the defensive. We [had] several vehicles elevation with water cannons to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading to a neighboring building”, he says.
Nearly 80 firefighters were dispatched to fight the fire. A little before 21h, the risk of aggravation is no longer in force. A house near the building in flame was slightly flooded due to the large amount of water used.
The area is cordoned off to allow the authorities do their job. The circulation is diverted on to the boulevard Pie-XI, between the rue du Grand-Bourg and the avenue of the Business. A firefighter was slightly injured during the response.
Investigators at the office of the fire commission have been made to collect information concerning the reasons that would have been able to create such a blaze.
