After the sentencing, da Silva is not arrested, and he will have the opportunity to appeal the decision
Federal regional court of Brazil for the fourth circuit rejected the appeal of former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on charges of corruption and money laundering. About it reports RBC-Ukraine with reference to the TV channel Globo.
The court also extended the sentence to 17 years, one month and ten days.
According to investigators, Lula da Silva was able to buy the house and land in Atibaia, state of Sao Paulo, in the illegally derived funds or to obtain them from private companies in exchange for perks, while property listed for the people around him. The ex-President himself said that he wanted to buy the house and land, but the owner refused to sell.
It is noted that after sentencing policy is not arrested, and he will have the opportunity to appeal the decision.
Lula da Silva was President of Brazil from 2003 to 2011. In 2016 he was sentenced to 12 years in prison for corruption in the so-called Petrobras. However, using the right to appeal, Lula da Silva was at large until April 2018, when the court refused to overturn the conviction and arrest of the former President, reducing his term to eight years and ten months.
Himself Lula da Silva denies all charges. On 9 November the ex-President was released after a year and seven months of imprisonment, stating that he intends to remain in politics.
