In Brussels four times will increase the penalty for a cigarette butt thrown.

The new rule will come into force from the beginning of 2020, reported in the city hall of Brussels.
The city authorities intend not only to increase the penalty from 50 to 200 euros, but also to raise awareness among smokers, to organize the installation of public ashtrays and implement a project of recycling cigarette butts through the pocket ashtrays.
Environmentalists believe that only one cigarette butt can contaminate up to 500 liters of water and for the decomposition of these wastes can take up to 15 years, they contain lead, arsenic, nicotine, carcinogens.
