The end of a chapter for the whole of Minneapolis, the beginning of a new era.

This would be one of our wishes for the year jazz which begins : see The Bad Plus version 2.0 in concert with us. Their touring itinerary not announced anything yet, but fingers crossed ; if early in the year, the calendar of jazz concerts in Montreal and elsewhere in Quebec, is still full of holes.

The brilliant composer and bassist Esperanza Spalding has made a bold album, Exposure, last fall.

Dream : the Festival international de jazz de Montréal (28 June-7 July) could be able to attract the concert of the great pianists cubans Chucho Valdes and Gonzalo Rubalcaba, the two together in a duo on the same scene ? Is it that he would invite finally the saxophonist, composer and conductor in california Kamasi Washington, and it is hoped a full album this year ? The return, almost six years after his last performance at the FIJM, the brilliant composer and bassist Esperanza Spalding, who launched a daring album, Exposure, last fall ?

By then, the Jazz all year round series of the said festival will offer the 18 January at The Astral concert French Quarter, kind of shows the centre of the French jazz scene featuring this time featuring the saxophonist Yacine Boularès, the quartet of saxophonist Samy Thiébault and the pianist Perrine Mansuy.

For jazz, lighter, or even cabotin, but executed with care, Jazz year will host the 31st January to MTelus the concert of Scott Bradlee’s Post Modern Juke Box, which takes up the way big band swing jazz of the success of pop in the last few years (Carly Rae Jepsen, Miley Cyrus, Lorde, Sam Smith, etc). Other names to remember in this series : the singer of blues-folk, Valerie June (9 February, Gesù), the composer and pianist, neo-classical Nils Frahm presenting the material from his new album All Melody (22 march, MTelus), the whole “brass house” Too Many Zooz (31 march, The Astral).

The scene with local jazz also takes the lead early in the new year. The haunts of choice to enjoy the jazz, here and elsewhere, The Upstairs and the Hash Eleven, added new concerts to their schedules almost every day — include, for example, the concert of the trio of drummer Italian Simone Prattico on January 31, at Upstairs to present material from her new album, Brooklyn Sessions.

On the side of the disk, the flutist François Richard, in Effendi, to be released the January 19 Release, recorded in formula quartet — the project should be presented on stage by the end of the winter. It is hoped before the melting of the snow in the album of the project Afro Cuban Revival, led by pianist Rafael Zaldivar, as well as that of the Jazzlab Orchestra, with compositions by the pianist Felix Stüssi.

It will be remembered

The year 2017 has been one of the centenarians, those of Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Buddy Rich and Dizzy Gillespie, and was rich in concerts and tributes and re-releases discography. A few other events that are in the program this year : we will still have in memory the work of Gillespie, passed away on January 6, 1993, and Sun Ra, who died 25 years ago on may 30, and the guitarist Wes Montgomery, which we will commemorate the death fifty years ago June 15. The jazz world will finally be able to certainly a thought for the brilliant Frank Zappa, who died December 4, 1993. Twenty-five years already…
