A new variant of the coronavirus has been detected in South Africa, which could explain the speed of transmissions of this second wave which also affects younger patients, announced the Minister of Health on Friday evening.
This “501.V2 variant” of the virus has been identified by South African researchers and reported to the World Health Organization (WHO), Minister Zwelini Mkhize said in a statement. This team has sequenced hundreds of samples from across the country since the pandemic began in March.
“They noticed that a particular variant dominated the results of the last two months,” he explained. In addition, South African doctors have noted a change in the epidemiological landscape, especially with more younger patients, without comorbidities, who develop severe forms of the disease.
