In just two weeks, on April 24, the fishing season for salmonids will begin finally !
As a good old tradition, each year, on the weekend of the opening is meant to be a happening. We see in the early morning of the spun vehicles towing their boat toward the four corners of la Belle Province. Everyone will then have finally the opportunity to outwit the trout and char that have enlivened many discussions in recent months.
Unfortunately, with the coming of the COVID-19, the government has had to put Quebec on break until may 4, to protect the citizens against this terrible pandemic.
On 3 April, the minister of Forests, Wildlife and Parks, Mr. Pierre Dufour, has confirmed that the fishing seasons will begin as planned, but that the followers should adhere to the guidelines and government recommendations. Thus, the lovers will have to avoid them to move from one region or from one city to the other.
“Travel in connection with leisure activities are not considered to be necessary,” said Mr. Dufour.
Add to that the instructions intended to prohibit gatherings, and social distancing of two metres.
In addition, all of the innkeepers of the forest as the Sépaq, outfitters and zecs have to wait, also, the governmental authorizations prior to revive their operations and to receive you within their territories structured.
You’ll soon have the chance to catch beautiful fish like these.
You have to stay close to home and fish in a body of water near your home. You can’t move you into a vehicle with other individuals your loved ones. Even in a rowboat, sit at the ends.
For residents of Montreal and surroundings (zone 8), this means that they can tease the black crappie, brown bullhead and channel catfish right now. Then, from the 1st may, they will launch the kits of pike and perch. Then, beginning may 8, enthusiasts will have the chance to tease the golden yellow and black. It will have to wait until June 15 to try to catch sturgeon, and until 19 June to fish for muskie and bass small and large mouth.
As there is not really much of salmonids in zone 8, the citizens concerned will have to make a cross on their opening in the Laurentians, the Outaouais, the eastern Townships, etc, and wait for the lifting of shields against the coronavirus before you can think about it. Anyway, be aware that many boat launch ramps water as Magog, to Ayer’s Cliff and other things are closed until further notice.
In most other areas around the metropolis (4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11,12 and 15), the permit holders will have to wait until may 15 before being able to measure up to the pike and golden brown. They have had however the opportunity to target trout and char since April 24, in their corner of paradise. For bass and muskie, the dates are well harmonized and occur at the same time as the zone 8.
Those who are fond of the flesh of yellow perch will have the opportunity to outsmart them since the 24 April in the areas 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11 and 15.
The crappie is a species that is tasty. If you live in zones 5, 6, 7, 9 or 11, you can try to catch them on or after 24 April. Marc Plourde, president and CEO of the Federation of outfitters of Quebec, explained to me : “Although many are disappointed to have to wait until may 4, it must be remembered that good year, bad year, several providers may not open their doors, in many cases, before the feast of the Queen, or even later, because of the late arrival of the good weather “.
Remember that at the base, you need a fishing license. Some of the points of sale that are part of the essential services such as grocery stores, convenience stores, service stations, and other sell still. It would be a great time, between you and me, that the government provides an e-permit online, such as the Ontario for several years already.
In addition, it is imperative to consult the website of the ministry to address fishing.wildlife.govt.qc.ca/ to find the regulatory exceptions for all the areas cited in this text.
Make sure you encourage your local merchants and buy in quebec. The initiative of the blue Basket, you will find good places to make your next shopping.
Resurrection of a body of water
Thanks to the efforts made over the years, it is now possible to capture large specimens such as this one in the waters of the Baskatong reservoir.
Not to overexploit a body of water, it should ideally be limited to collect only the interest in fish farming so as not to weaken the capital or if you prefer, the foundations of a healthy population and growing.
The wildlife technicians of the ministry of Forests, Fauna and Parks (MFFP) to impose size limits and capture and establish fishing periods to protect the various species that swim in our waters.
Another time, we drew, drew and drew, until you deplete the fish populations in many bodies of water. Some seemed to believe that it was an inexhaustible resource.
Just think of the many paradises, like the Gouin reservoir, for example, who, after years of overfishing, have become much less productive due to the limited number of specimens that had not yet been racked.
The Baskatong reservoir is a beautiful water body of more than 400 km2 located in the north of Maniwaki and Mont-Laurier. This artificial lake was created in 1927 following the construction of the dam Mercier. After the reservoir of Lake Bull, the Baskatong, which has the highest tidal range in the province with a height of 15 metres.
In the years 1960 to 1980, the Baskatong was recognized as an excellent site of walleye fishing accessible. Unfortunately, towards the end of the 1980s, a decline was felt, so that in the decades of 1990, 2000 and 2010, many fans felt the quality of fishing poor or not very interesting.
To attempt to stop the collapse of the populations, the local outfitters have united their efforts in order to found, in 1998, the community wildlife Area of the Baskatong reservoir. Therefore, concrete actions have been put forward. It has, for example, cultured walleye from 1998 to 2016 and ouananiches over the course of three years, which has allowed this species to reproduce naturally.
The authorities have also created three sanctuaries in the breeding areas, set the size limit of 37 to 53 cm, carried out censuses by airplane flight to understand the pressure fishing, revitalized and rejuvenated, and spawning grounds, set up a squad of assistants in the protection of wildlife, etc
Biologists and wildlife technicians of the MFFP are of experimental fisheries to see the health of the herd of golden yellow every five years. Imagine, in 2004, they have captured 11 gold night/net. This figure increased to 16 in 2008. In 2013, fishers had to admit that the efforts of the AFC had been successful, as this figure had risen to 25 golden night/net, which is more than double in less than a decade.
In 2018, although the word is being passed in on the quality and quantity of catches, as fishing pressure is growing with all 32-outfitters-camp-sites and the increasing number of vacationers and residents, that abundance attracts colonies of gulls and cormorants, hundreds of loons and other bouffeurs fish, be aware that the figure was still 25 golden night/net.
The correct calculation
As I explained to Jean-Luc Lacroix, when it is known that on average, there is a hatching rate of 10 % in the spawning grounds and natural that the rate hatched, there is only a meagre 1 %, which will be the minimum size of 37 cm, the importance of the delivery of water takes on even greater meaning, as well as the protection of spawning grounds.
Few people realize that a female of 37 cm, average age of 5 years, will produce 15 000 to 30 000 eggs. To 53 cm, it will be 12 years old and will be 50 000 to 100 000 eggs. For a superb specimen of 75 cm, at the age of a quarter of a century, it is estimated that she will lay from 150 000 to 300 000 eggs. Although these numbers seem huge, keep in mind that for every thousand eggs, only one offspring will reach the minimum size of 37 cm.
To evidence that all the stakeholders of the Baskatong reservoir are on the right track, you should know that in 2016, a client of the outfitter Cockanagog has captured a trophy of 107 cm.

Everything for everyone
The master certified instructor and owner of school of fly fishing Modulus, Jean-François Lavallée, was telling me that there has been an increase in the number of certified instructors in Quebec and Canada. There are now 16 in the Beautiful Province, and 60 in the country. It will certainly increase the quality of education offered to the enthusiast in fishing schools, such as Caudal, Kenauk, etc, and in clubs such as the fly fishers of metropolitan Montreal.
This friendly individual informed me also that Pat Johnson, the director of operations and a certified instructor of Kenauk Nature, develops from a little school on his fishing. That which differentiates, what are its pools of start natural. At the end of this global project, Mr. Lavallée believes that this site will be able to compete with the legendary San Francisco Golden Gate Casting Club.
Jean-François looked forward also to the redemption of the store Salmo Nature by Rémi’brien, who will ensure the continuity of this shop with a storefront in Montreal.
