Having acquired Robin Lehner during the season, the director-general of the Golden Knights Vegas Kelly McCrimmon has not wanted to confirm that Marc-Andre Fleury was going to be the trusted steward of the organization, in the event of a return to play in the national hockey League (NHL).
Since the beginning of the season 2018-2019, Lehner has worn the colors of the New York Islanders, the Chicago black hawks and the Knights. He has taken part in 82 games, showing a sheet of 44-23-10. Its effectiveness rate ,925 is the fourth best in the circuit among goalkeepers who have played at least 23 parties during this period. Fleury, for his part, is 36th, to ,909.
Since he was acquired from the Blackhawks, Lehner has also won three of seven starts in front of the kennel club of Nevada. He triumphed each time, yielding only five goals. Fleury has shown a record of 2-2, giving 10 nets.
“This is a transaction which has really solidified that position, for it to become one of our strengths for the playoffs,” said McCrimmon to the official website of the team on Saturday.
Thus, even if Fleury has won 78 duels playoffs over his career, McCrimmon believes that it would be early for the organization to commit themselves now on the identity of the masked man who began the first game.
“With two preseason matchups and three meetings in the round [before the first knockout round], Pete [DeBoer] and his assistants will have the opportunity to use two guards as they wish. These are decisions that the coaches will make when the time comes, but it is comforting to have such good players in the nets.”
Avoid the trap
Programmed to follow a regular schedule like a swiss clock from one year to the other, players from the NHL, just like their bosses, will have to avoid the pitfalls of this season out of the ordinary a few weeks of the potential recovery.
In fact, several players have already indicated that they had embarked on a programme of summer training, pending the recovery – or not – of activities. Still, the Stanley cup could be awarded in the coming months.
“We are in uncharted territory, was recognized by the DG. I think the challenge is that we feel as if we were in the off-season, but we must prepare for the playoffs. This is the time of year when we should prepare the draft and the free agent market. Of course, this is not the case, since we hope to launch the series soon.”
