SRINAGAR, India (Reuters) – The mastermind of a 2019 attack that killed 40 Indian paramilitary soldiers was killed in a shootout with security forces, Indian police in Kashmir said on Saturday.

Mohammad Ismail Alvi, the commander of the militant organization Jaish-e-Mohammad was killed south of the regional capital Srinagar, Vijay Kumar, the Kashmir police chief, told Reuters.

“Mohammad Ismail Alvi aka Lamboo aka Adnan was from the Masood Azhar family. He was involved in the conspiracy and planning of the Lethpora Pulwama attack, “said Kumar.

A suicide bomber rammed a car into a bus carrying Indian paramilitary police in Kashmir on February 14, 2019, killing 40 of them in the deadliest attack in decades against security forces in the disputed region, increasing the tensions with his arch enemy Pakistan.

The Pakistan-based militant Islamist group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Indian government accused Pakistan of allowing militant groups to operate from its soil and asked it to take action. Islamabad said it rejected the suggestion that it was related to the attack.

Kashmir is a Muslim-majority region at the heart of decades of nuclear-armed hostility between India and Pakistan. Neighbors rule parts of the region while claiming the entire territory as their own.
