SAINT-VIANNEY | A fire completely destroys the sawmill hagia Irene, located in Saint-Vianney, in the Matapedia, Monday evening.
Firefighters received the call around 19: 30 and, when they arrived on the scene of the fire, it was already too late: the conflagration was widespread. Four barracks were called in for reinforcement. In addition to firefighters from Saint-Vianney, fire Amqui, Saint-René and Lac-au-Saumon, have lent a hand.
According to preliminary information, the fire would be of accidental origin. The fire could have been sparked by welding work. It is estimated the damage at several million dollars.
This sawmill was the main employer in this small town, with 35 employees. It is another blow for the town of 450 people. On the 11th of November last, one of the last family farms in the corner had also been destroyed by fire.
The mayor of Saint-Vianney, Georges Guérard, insisted on the importance of the sawmill in the region, particularly as an engine of economic activity.
“There was a lot of traffic that the plant is brought directly to the other companies of the municipality, such as the grocery store and the restaurant.”
Some volunteer firefighters who have been called in to help fight the fire were themselves employees of the sawmill.
The residents of Saint-Vianney encountered Tuesday were concerned for the future of the company, which has worked very well since its relaunch, a few years ago.
The owner of the sawmill, Sainte-Irene confirmed to TVA News that, if the insurance companies compensate, his will is to rebuild the factory.
