After a few months of research, Christian Mbilli would have found a promoter for the rest of his career. The French, who trains with Marc Ramsay, is on the verge of signing an agreement with Eye of the Tiger Management (EOTTM) according to the Journal de Montreal learned on Friday.
We are talking about a long-term pact between the two parties. The news will be confirmed by EOTTM early next week.
At the start of his professional career in 2017, Mbilli (16-0, 15 KOs) joined forces with Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM). However, at the end of 2019, Yvon Michel decided not to renew the former Olympian's contract for several reasons. The 25-year-old athlete notably found that his career was treading water.
“We are very close to an agreement with him,” confirmed Camille Estephan. All that remains is to obtain his signature at the bottom of the contract. ”
This is the second time that EOTTM has obtained a former GYM protégé. Custio Clayton was the first, but it ended badly. The boxer, from Nova Scotia, performs on the cards of Ontario promoter Lee Baxter.
Mbilli is one of the brightest hopes among boxers who train in Quebec. With Estephan as promoter, he will be able to have the necessary resources to climb the international ladder.
EOTTM will therefore count on an explosive trio in the super-middleweight (168 lbs). In addition to Mbilli, we will find David Lemieux and Erik Bazinyan there. They are all of Marc Ramsay's proteges.
Of the three, it is Bazinyan who is closest to a world championship fight. It is said that his progress has been phenomenal since arriving at Ramsay's gymnasium.
After his tough fight against Max Bursak, Lemieux still has things to prove in this category. The slugger has been disciplined since his fight last December. He has been training on a regular basis in order to be ready for his next fight which should be on October 3rd.
As for Mbilli, he made the jump to 168 lbs last year. Due to his musculature, it was increasingly difficult for him to gain weight at 160 lbs.
Quebec boxing has had great years with this division. Eric Lucas and Lucian Bute were champions at this weight. Then, Jean Pascal and Adonis Stevenson started their professional careers there.
Will the EOTTM trio be able to relive these beautiful moments for amateurs? We will find out in a few years.
On another note, Batyr Jukembayev (18-0, 14 KOs) turned down the offer to face Shohjahon Ergashev (18-0, 16 KOs) in November in the United States.
Estephan does not throw the towel with the Kazakh, but we feel that his patience is crumbling.
“When we offered the contract to Bupas, Batyr's coach, he was delighted. He was up for the challenge and he even told me Batyr had a good chance of winning, Estephan explained. Bupas tried to convince Batyr for three days, but he was unsuccessful.
“I wonder what I'm going to have to do to get him to accept a fight. He refused our “Super 6” then our mini-tournament of four boxers. He asked me for a big fight in the United States. I brought him to the table and he refused it again. ”
