Медведчук: команда Зеленского придерживается политики Порошенко по отношению к УПЦ

KIEV, November 8. /TASS/. The President’s team of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky continues ex-President Petro Poroshenko’s policy of persecution of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). On Friday said the Chairman of the political Council of the Ukrainian party “the Opposition platform For life”, the Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Viktor Medvedchuk.

“We see that the policy of Poroshenko (its embodiment in the Affairs of the Church began getting Thomas and raider takeovers of churches and property of the UOC is the only canonical Orthodox Church in Ukraine) today the team continues Zelensky”, – reads the statement of Medvedchuk, published on the website of the party.

Medvedchuk commented on the words of the Minister of culture, youth and sports of Ukraine Volodymyr Borodyansky, who said that the UOC “should bring in the name identification that it belongs to the Russian Orthodox Church”. “The Opposition platform” regard the Minister’s approval, as a manifestation of lack of professionalism and cynicism towards voters. “Because of their ignorance or of political engagement, the Minister of culture ignores the fact that the UOC is an independent, Autonomous Church, whose leadership is elected by the Council of bishops. The UOC has its own Ecclesiastical court and the Holy Synod and is completely independent from the Russian Orthodox Church, – said Medvedchuk. – Statements of the Minister of culture, member of the team Zelensky – not that other, as continuation of the policy of Poroshenko, who for political reasons have intervened in Church Affairs that led to the split of the Orthodox Church not only in Ukraine but throughout the world.”

Medvedchuk noted that the team Zelensky also continues the policy of Poroshenko against Russian-speaking population of Ukraine. “Cave Russophobia, which manifests itself in discrimination against the Russian language, Russian schools, discrimination of Russian-speaking citizens, is the continuation of politics Poroshenko and his flawed implementation of the slogan “Army. Language. Faith,” said Medvedchuk.

The creation of a non-canonical Church

The former leadership of Ukraine headed by President Petro Poroshenko, which came to power in a coup in the winter of 2014, actively extending the idea of establishing in the country, local Orthodox Church, which was not related to the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). In April 2018 Poroshenko personally appealed to the Constantinople Patriarch Bartholomew to help in the realization of this idea, namely, to recognize the country’s two non-canonical structures – the Kyiv Patriarchate and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. In October last year, the Ecumenical Patriarchate lifted the anathema to the leaders of these unrecognized by the world Orthodox Church structures and announced that proceeds to the process of granting of the Tomos of autocephaly. In December in Kiev with the direct participation of Poroshenko and under the auspices of Constantinople was the so-called unification Council, which proclaimed the establishment of the new Church structure called the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, which the Patriarch of Constantinople in January of this year provided Tomos.

UOC has considered these actions as illegitimate and announced the suspension of the Eucharistic communion with Constantinople.
