For the 75th anniversary of the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate
75 years ago, on 5 November 1944, in the family of Archpriest Vladimir Berezovsky, a temple priest of the village of Korytne, Chernivetska region, a boy was born, who was named Orestes. He could become an engineer – a young man graduated from the Chernivtsi technical school and three years he studied at the technical faculty of the local University. But it happened anyway – Orest Berezovsky has decided to devote himself to the service of God and people. In 1969, he comes from the second class of the Moscow theological Seminary. So, in the years of the atheistic state of stagnation began as a Confessor the way of the future Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.
His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufry the Primate of the UOC-MP
Orest Berezovsky graduated from the Moscow theological schools: the Seminary first, and then the Academy. Interestingly, the work for which the future Archbishop was awarded the degree of candidate of theology, was devoted to the pastoral Ministry of St. job of Pochaev. Exactly 10 years later, in 1988, Archimandrite Onuphrius (Berezovsky) will be the glorious Governor Pochayiv Lavra.
But while his life is connected with the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra. For 18 years, after taking the monastic vows with the name Onufry, in honor of St. Onuphrius the Great, the future Metropolitan of Kiev carried a different but common for monasteries, of obedience, and in 1985 became Dean of the famous monastery. By the way, and today Metropolitan Onufry, according to the testimony of inhabitants of Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, loves the simple monastic obedience, as, for example, work in the refectory. It is known that during the pilgrimages in Russian on Athos Holy monastery, his Beatitude Panteleimonov happily collects and washes dishes, sweeping the floor.

“If I were now asked if I had seen Holy men in my life, I would have said: Yes, I have seen many saints in my life; especially when he lived in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, then to the Holy Dormition Pochayiv Lavra. Saw many of the saints, that is, monks who are strong and courageous struggle with his personal weaknesses, passions and flaws tried firmly and unswervingly follow the way of Holiness, a path that is paved with divine love and humility. There were many, but among them particularly shone father Archimandrite Kirill (Pavlov), our dear spiritual father, mentor and teacher” these words from the speech of his Beatitude Metropolitan Onufry at a gala evening in honor of the 100th anniversary of the ever-memorable elder Kirill (Pavlov). His Beatitude Onufry was his spiritual child. From the teacher of the Kyiv Metropolitan has adopted a special, considerate and even selfless love for people. Occupying more than a responsible position in the Church associated with many labors, cares and anxieties, Metropolitan Onufry continually takes and resolves problems like clergy and regular laymen, not refusing anyone’s help and attention.
In 1990, Archimandrite Onuphrius was consecrated Bishop of Chernovtsy and Bukovina. So began his Ministry in a small country, to whom the Archbishop gave 24 years of his life. Leading multinational Department, Metropolitan Onufry was fluent in all the languages spoken by his flock. And it’s not just Russian and Ukrainian, but also Moldavian and Hungarian. In Chernovtsy and Bukovina diocese those national minorities still have the right to serve and to preach in their native language.
In 1992, Bishop Onufry opposed the intention of the then Metropolitan of Kiev Philaret (Denisenko) to organize the Ukrainian “autocephaly”. For which he was subjected to persecution. Metropolitan Onufry – a crucial member of the Kharkiv Council, nizozemsko schismatic Denisenko. Perhaps the most important act of this Council was the establishment of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate. At the same time, Ukraine has arrived and the first Primate of the UOC his Beatitude Metropolitan Vladimir (Sabodan). His Patriarchal way was bloodless martyrdom. By the beginning of 2014 the health of Metropolitan Volodymyr deteriorated so much that it took the election of a Locum Tenens. It was Metropolitan Onufry.
After the repose of Metropolitan Volodymyr, the Primate of the UOC MP was elected his Eminence Onufry. So, in the mournful period of the victory of euromaidan and civil war, during the open persecution by openly nationalist Ukrainian state in the Church he continued his confessional Ministry.
The fact that Metropolitan Onufry will not be nice poroshenkovskoy power, it became clear on may 8, 2015 when, during a celebration in Parliament of the “heroes” of the fratricidal carnage in the Donbass refused to get up Metropolitan Onufry and Anthony – Manager of the UOC-MP and Bishop of Iona–, Chairman of the Synodal youth Department. It was a protest of the clergy of the canonical Church against the civil war. The nationalist clique made it a scandal.
The protest of the clergy of the canonical Church against the civil war
Known intransigence of his Beatitude Onufry and against the so-called “PCU” and fanatskogo Thomas, which he aptly named “Tomos of slavery.” What is called “multiple” acts, the Primate of the UOC-MP on 25 September 2018 and was entered into the database of the controversial website “the Peacemaker,” which is essentially a modern “hit list” as “an agent of influence of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) in Ukraine. Against the creation of an independent local Church in Ukraine.”
The Metropolitan Onufry with all its irreconcilable with the dissenters and their patrons position, in contrast, never goes to the person. He operates strictly in accordance with the patristic Covenant not to hate the person, and owning their sin. And is expressed very clearly – that means “technical” mindset. So, for example, in a recent interview, the Archbishop simply said that “schism is man’s attempt to make the Church like he wants, not God.” And it became clear the behavior is not so much the father of Ukrainian division of “Filaret” Denisenko and its successor, the “Epiphany” Dumenko, but vinarsky theologians from the policy of seeking to redraw the map of the world Orthodoxy.
With extreme pain says the Primate of the UOC-MP on the civil war in the Donbass and the need for its cessation. And how different is his confidence from the position of leader of the Uniates Shevchuk, who said that the end of the war want those who afraid for his own skin! “The Church says that no earthly problems, even collected all together, not worth the life of one person, it is on the scales of existence outweighs all the problems. That is all the problem is absolutely not worth it, that one man died for them” – said, in particular, his Beatitude Metropolitan Onufry. However, he does not doubt that “always remains on the ground the path and the way to solve the problems of the world. You have a gift of words, which the Lord has given us, and we can discuss and share words. There is the gift of the inner sense of the situation, and using words, negotiation can look each other in the eye and find common ground. These methods encourages the Church to solve all earthly problems. And prays for peace in Ukraine”.
As you know, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate unites those regions, which the Ukrainian state has lost due to the nationalist policy of the Kiev authorities. To date, the only thing that connects earth to 2014, former Ukraine, it is a canonical Church. And even her enemies know that such a man as Primate of the UOC his Beatitude Metropolitan Onufry can neither break, nor intimidate. After all, on his side, and the truth of God, and the sincere love of millions-strong flock.
And the Lord Onufry weekly leads on the Ukrainian TV channel “inter” copyright transfer “the Word of the Primate”. It is a question about gospel truths and religious holidays. This is called enlightenment of the people.2 November released the 54th edition of the programme, which our blessed Lord made a wise blessing to all of us, in which he urged to be grateful to God for everything “then all we have in life – sweet and bitter – will bring us benefits in this life and in eternal.”Vera NADEZHDINA
