MoveOn CEO Responds to President Biden’s Speech on Voting Rights

Following President Biden’s statements on voting rights, MoveOn CEO Rahna Epting issued the following statement:

“Our democracy is under daily attack from forces that seek to destroy it for their own political gain. It began long before January 6 and has continued for more than six months after the attack on the Capitol.

“This is a five-alarm fire for our democracy. From attacking voting rights, lying daily about the latest elections, falsifying state audits, and refusing to allow a nonpartisan investigation into the biggest attack on our homeland since 9/11, Republicans have opened a multi-front war. . about our democracy.

“Today’s President Biden’s speech is important and made it clear that there is much more work to be done. While the problem has been recognized, we now need strong and sustained presidential engagement in this systemic crisis. We need President Biden to use everything. the power of your office to do whatever it takes to safeguard our democracy and protect our right to vote.History will judge our inaction and the erosion of American democracy if we fail to meet the moment.

“We must remove the obstacle that stands in the way of tackling this crisis: obstructionism. The right to vote, the cornerstone of our democracy, must not be subject to political obstruction by Mitch McConnell. The arcane and outdated Senate rules and procedures are no more important than our constitutional rights.

“We will continue to demand that Democrats at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue take bolder action to dismantle this vestige of the Jim Crow era. We can’t let today’s Republican Party get in the way of what we all need: a just democracy that works for everyone. ”
