Native Union’s attractive and functional Rise Dock provides a sturdy home for your MagSafe charging pad and acts as a great desktop stand for your iPhone 12.
Weighing in at about one pound, the Native Union Rise Dock is made almost entirely of stainless steel. This provides not only the necessary weight, but also expresses an excellent build quality.
It has a modern design with sharp corners and sharp angles. You will not find curves or rounded edges here.
Rise Dock and MagSafe Disk
Rise Dock comes in two parts: the body and the bracket that inserts into the back. Most of the weight is relegated to the body, and the support is reasonably thin.
A non-slip rubber pad covers the entire front, helping to hold the device when mounted. To insert your MagSafe charging pad (that’s right, you must provide your own MagSafe charging pad), insert the USB-C end into the base and pull it out. Once you’re done, you’ll insert the disc into the base, where it sits flush against the front.
Subtle Native Union logo
The cable runs through the back of the device and can go to the left or right of the mount. On the right edge is a depressed Native Union logo.
Functionality and use
Using the Rise Dock is easy. It is just a typical MagSafe charger. Bring your iPhone 12 closer and the magnet will snap it into place. The magnet stays strong and the rubber pad prevents the phone from shaking.
Viewing Mythic Quest in Rise Dock
We used the Rise Dock in both portrait and landscape orientation and had no problems. It’s perfect for watching videos and was in a good angle to take a FaceTime call. Even vibrating during a call, our phone never came out for free.
While Native Union designed the Rise Dock to be used vertically as a stand, it seems like a missed opportunity to incorporate the ability to work flat as well. All that was needed would have been to place an additional slot at the bottom to allow the cable to be routed while lying down. You wouldn’t have seen this from the front and it would fit more desks too.
If only flat could be used
This is not a deal breaker, and most will surely prefer to use it upright, but having that flat option would have added a bit more value.
Should I buy Rise Dock from Native Union?
Of all the springs we’ve tested so far for MagSafe, Native Union comes out on top.
It looks great and provides enhanced functionality over a single MagSafe loading disc. It doesn’t charge differently to disk on its own, but the ability to hold your iPhone and use it in landscape orientation is a huge benefit for any desk or nightstand.
The price here is almost high, but we think it is fair to the market. Steel isn’t cheap these days, and the quantity here seems perfect. Just enough for ample weight, but not too much to be excessive and needlessly add to the cost.
Considering you need to provide a MagSafe loading disc, putting the total sunk cost closer to $ 80, a higher value would put it in the “hard to justify” category.
As long as you agree to the largest investment in your charging solution and appreciate the modern black aesthetic, we have no qualms about recommending the Rise Dock to any iPhone 12 user.
