Otmar Szafnauer: “Lance Stroll totally deserves his place”

Otmar Szafnauer:

Racing Point technical director Otmar Szafnauer believes Quebecer Lance Stroll is having an excellent season and that he has fully deserved to keep his wheel next year.

On the sidelines of the Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix which will be contested this weekend, the boss of the team that will become Aston Martin in 2021 said that Stroll's development was encouraging and that he expected to see even better. from the 21 year old athlete.

This season, Stroll managed to reach the podium at Monza and added two fourth places. It was in this position that he was driving two weeks ago in Tuscany when a mechanical failure caused a violent off the track.

“Lance did very well to get back to third place [at the Italian GP],” Szafnauer said in comments reported by Motorsport. If he had been in the lead, I think we would have had the pace to win, but those are assumptions, and we are now focused on the Grands Prix ahead. ”

“The bottom line is that Lance will do more and the team will too. It's a big season for him, his best so far, with very mature performances in qualifying and racing. After the Monza podium, he was fourth in the championship with only the Mercedes and Verstappen drivers ahead of him. He's on the rise and clearly shows his talent, which is why he totally deserves his place alongside Sebastian [Vettel] next year. ”

More means

To help Stroll improve his lot in the standings this year, he will once again take advantage of the evolution – a new set of aerodynamic parts – of Racing Point in Russia, according to the German trade magazine “Auto Motor und Sport”. He had been the only one of the team's two drivers to use it in Tuscany as he was ahead of his team-mate Sergio Perez in the standings.

However, Perez was also to benefit from the GP of Russia, but the accident of Stroll in Tuscany changed the plans. The team were not able to produce enough parts for the two cars.

For the next few seasons, the takeover of Force India by the consortium led by Lance's father, Lawrence Stroll, and Aston Martin's investments will help prevent this kind of situation and give the team “a thousand little things that will make the faster car ”.

“We have increased the size of the team by 25% in two years, so we have hired a significant number of people. We are very well supported by Aston Martin, our main sponsor BWT, Lawrence and the consortium. Because of this, we can now afford to do things that we could not do before. It's things like the new factory, more production capacity, the hiring of people who bring performance to the car. And that gives me great hopes for the future. I think we are going to go one step further, ”Szafnauer explained.
