Very early: Panic’s Playdate portable gaming device has gone live. The quirky gaming machine maker promised to build 20,000 examples by 2021, but apparently underestimated the demand as they all voiced in less than 20 minutes.

Panic said it would generate even more by 2022, promising to adjust production based on demand. Judging from what we’ve seen so far, they will be very busy next year.

The initial lot of 20,000 Playdates went up for pre-order yesterday afternoon and according to TechCrunch (via a Panic rep), the entire assignment sold out in less than 20 minutes.

Unfortunately, the pre-order drop was not without its problems. The panic found some technical problems related to its international order processing system. The company said there was also a small issue with its stock tracking system that incorrectly showed that the device was out of stock for some potential buyers.

Panic keeps accepting advance orders for Playdate, but they won’t ship until 2022. The whimsical handheld is priced at $ 179, which includes 24 games. It’s a bit minimalist, with a small monochrome screen and no microSD card slot. Playdate includes a unique crank-shaped input device that some games use intelligently.

Early reviews were largely favorable, with one post labeling it a Game Boy from a different dimension.
