Recovery Plan: the UMQ welcomes the assistance of the federal

Plan de relance: l’UMQ salue l’aide du fédéral

MONTREAL – The Union of municipalities of Quebec (UMQ) welcomes the agreement reached between the federal government and the provinces and territories.

Ottawa unveiled Thursday the amount of federal transfers to this plan of recovery that exceeds $ 19 billion $.

“This announcement gives us hope that all will be waiting for you to take the municipal world of uncertainty,” said Suzanne Roy, president of the UMQ and mayor of Ste-Julie.

The health crisis induced by the COVID-19 has greatly impacted the finances of the municipalities, whose losses are estimated at some $ 1.4 billion by the end of the year 2020.

The majority of these losses relates to the collective transport sector.

The agreement provides $ 2 billion to support operational costs related to the COVID-19 and $ 1.8 billion for the transit.

This mattress financial will allow municipalities to breathe, according to the UMQ, which challenges Quebec on the way to implement on the ground this recovery plan.

“We turn now to the government of Quebec so that we can arrange, as quickly as possible, of the sums reserved for Québec municipalities, and the terms that will give them a bit of oxygen,” added Ms. Roy.
