Workers in the sector of restaurants and bars, are launching a new association to assert their rights and provide social benefits.

David Marcheterre and Hugo Sabourin wish that the voice of the employees of the restaurants and bars of the province to be heard. Especially at a time when the industry reintroduced its activities, after several months of stop due to the pandemic COVID-19.

“The only associations in the sector include the owners of institutions, but we never hear the voice of the employees. Our goal is to advance the industry as a whole, ” says Mr. Marcheterre, president of the Association of catering professionals of Quebec (APRQ).

10 years of experience

The founders of the new association, David Marcheterre and Hugo Sabourin, are both aged 30 and have been working for ten years as a server and sommelier. For the past 2 years, they have surveyed the field in order to evaluate the best way to represent the workers of their sector.

The option of unionization has been rejected, ” says Mr. Marcheterre.

“This is not the solution, according to us, and we do not want to interfere in the businesses. The association that offers is intended to enable workers to express themselves on issues that concern them and to offer them benefits are optional, such as insurance, counseling, a pension fund or discounts corporate, according to the wish of the members. “

The enhancement of the industry

In addition to raising and defending the interests of chefs, servers, sommeliers, and other employees in the sector, the objective of the APRQ will be valuing the work of restoration among the general public.

A fundraising campaign was launched last June 10 in order to group the funds necessary to start the activities.

“We know that many workers in the area have suffered job losses recently, so we invite those who can to contribute, but without obligation. People interested in becoming members are invited to complete a pre-accession on our page, and, as soon as the services will be put in place, we contact them. ”

The annual contribution could represent 30 or $ 40, and already a hundred people have filled out the form for pre-accession, according to David Marcheterre.
