In Québec, this will include the ability to renovate the public HOUSING built by Ottawa in the 1970s and 1980s.

The Trudeau government will inject billions of dollars into social housing over the next few years, including a new housing allowance of $ 2,500 per year targeting 300 000 households.

Ottawa seeks to restore ” the role of the leader of the federal housing “, explained Wednesday, representatives of the canada mortgage and housing corporation (CMHC). Recall that the federal government has massively disengaged from the housing sector since the 1990s, much to the chagrin of the provinces that have since had to compensate by injecting more funds into social housing.

In total, the Trudeau government talks about a plan of $ 40 billion over ten years, but this sum includes billion have already been announced in the last budget, those who are related to the existing agreements and funds from other envelopes.

Funds in the HOUSING

In addition to the new housing allowance which will be paid from 2020, the plan includes a new fund of $ 15.9 billion dedicated to the construction of new housing and renovation of the existing park.

In Québec, this will include the ability to renovate the public HOUSING built by Ottawa in the 1970s and 1980s. CMHC does not exclude, moreover, the construction of new HOUSING, is there shown.

The new investments should finally invest in co-operatives whose agreements with the federal government have expired.

Remains, however, to know how will be distributed the amounts among the provinces, a piece of information that CMHC was not able to disclose on Wednesday.

It is noted, however, that these latter will have to double the bet of Ottawa if they wish to have access to their share. Officials indicate that the negotiations are still ongoing and are advancing well.

Other details will follow.
