The art of Armenian letters is included in the List of intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO

The intergovernmental Committee for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage, meeting in Bogota on Wednesday morning included one more item in the List of intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent safeguarding, and nine elements on the Representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. In the afternoon, and on Thursday the Committee will continue to consider applications for inclusion in the Lists of intangible cultural heritage.

A new item in the List of intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent safeguarding: the rite of Spring “Urask Karagod” (Belarus).

Thus, the total number of items added to the List of intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent safeguarding in the session of the Committee this year is the five elements. This list contains elements of the living heritage whose viability is at risk. List help mobilize international cooperation and assistance to improve the transmission of these cultural practices with the participation of the communities concerned.

Among the new elements in the Representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity – the Armenian alphabet and its reflection in culture.

“The element involves a centuries-old art of the Armenian alphabet, as well as the rich culture of decorative letters and its many applications. This element of the heritage also has a wide variety of decorative symbols, characterized by different forms, such as birds, animals or mythical creatures. In addition to its primary function of archiving and transmission of information, the Armenian written language permeates virtually all layers of society, including crafts. Educational institutions of all levels, youth centres and the Armenian Apostolic Church played an important role in the transmission of this element of living heritage”, – stated in the message.

The list also included: mountain Grazing, seasonal moving of livestock migratory routes in the Mediterranean and in the Alps (Austria, Greece, Italy), knowledge, skills, traditions, and practices associated with date palm (Bahrain; Egypt; Iraq; Jordan; Kuwait; Mauritania; Morocco; Oman; Palestine; Saudi Arabia; Sudan; Tunisia; United Arab Emirates; Yemen),

“Ommegang” is an annual historical procession and popular festival in Brussels, festival of Santísima Trinidad del Señor Jesús del Gran Poder in La Paz (Bolivia, Plurinational State of), traditional technique of making Airag honoring the vessel kookor and its associated customs (Mongolia), cultural complex of the Bumba-Mei-the battle of the state of maranhão (Brazil), Morna is a musical style of Cape Verde, Byzantine singing (Cyprus, Greece).

Representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity aims to raise public awareness about the traditions and knowledge of communities without recognizing standards of excellence or exclusivity.

Earlier in the list of intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO at the request of Armenia included the DUDUK, the khachkar (stone-cross), the epic of David of Sasun, Lavash, dance building.
