If you want to add a extra comfort layer or thickness to your current mattress configuration instead of buying a brand new bed, a mattress topper might be the perfect solution. A bedspread is much more affordable than buying a new mattress. And if you’re a bedtime snack, an ornament can keep your bed cleaner by protecting it from stains or spills. Honestly, there are endless reasons to want an ornament.
Whatever your reason for wanting a new mattress topper, it can be difficult to decide on just one, as there is a seemingly endless variety of options. That is why I have rounded up my favorites from the dozens of mattress toppers that I have tried over the years. If you suffer from back pain, first of all I feel sorry for you, and it is important to find a support option that gives you relief. Walmart decided to get into the online bedding game and came up with the Allswell brand, which has quality trim at super affordable prices.
The Allswell Copper Infused Gel Mattress Topper is 4 inches thick and adds a significant amount of support to your mattress. Especially if your bed is thinner: less than eight inches high. Back pain sufferers benefit from thick, supportive surfaces, and this one is heavier than many of the different trimmings out there, including the ones on this list.
It has a medium firm profile, or about a 7 out of 10, with 10 being the firmer. It will ensure that your spine is supported and held in a neutral position, while a smooth surface will allow your back to sag and promote an unnatural and uncomfortable curve.
Allswell’s Copper Gel Trim is made with memory foam and in turn has a slow-response memory foam feel. Still, it’s not as obvious as DreamFoam (see below), thanks to the layer of polyethylene foam underneath. The ornament is also infused with copper gel to help draw heat away from your body. It doesn’t feel cold in any way, but it didn’t retain heat like traditional memory foam.
Prices start at $ 99 for a twin and go up to $ 155 for a king.
Warm sleepers (like me) seeking relief from the temperature at night, but don’t have the money to buy a new, breathable mattress, can enjoy Nest Bedding’s refreshing cover.
It’s two inches thick and made with their special Energex foam, which feels airy and responsive. I think it is similar to neutral foam, as opposed to memory foam, which can be dense and slow to respond. You can see small air bubbles in the foam, allowing more airflow to move through the bed. Wrapping the foam slab is a textured gray cover with straps at all four corners to secure the cover to the mattress, preventing it from sliding across the bed.
The cover is made from the same cooling material found in Nest Alexander mattresses. It is not frosted, but it is not soft nor does it retain heat like other decorations might be. When you run your hand over the cover, the fibers feel softer than fluffy and help contribute to a more temperature-neutral sleep.
Prices start at $ 179 for a Nest Bedding double-size cooling mattress topper and go up to $ 269 for a California King-size.
DreamFoam comes from the trusted Brooklyn Bedding brand, which manufactures all of their products in-house in the United States. If you’re a tried-and-true memory foam fanatic, boy, I have a recommendation for you.
The second I lay down on this topper, I literally uttered, “Whoa” because the memory foam sensation was so intense. Its foam is so soft that your body immediately sinks and you snuggle into a cocoon in the shape of you. Compare this to a Tempur Pedic topper, which is so dense that it takes a few moments for the foam to activate and compress.
The DreamFoam Gel Swirl Cover adds another two inches to your existing mattress, and it’s really nice if you’re looking for that traditional memory foam feel. Not to mention that it is affordable. I would rate the firmness as medium to medium soft. However, with that being said, the softer the mattress you put it on, the softer it will feel. I think it’s great for side sleepers or really light sleepers who prefer a soft surface to sleep on.
Prices start at $ 50 for a double size and go up to $ 85 for a king. (DreamFoam is also currently offering a 20% discount on mattresses.)

If you are a side sleeper looking to soften your bed, or just want to add another layer of softness to your already cozy mattress, I would consider the Layla memory foam topper. It is not a dense memory foam feel, but light and airy, similar to the feel of the Layla mattress. It reminds me of neutral foam in that it is fluffier than slow responding.
It’s infused with copper gel beads, and on her website, Layla describes the feeling as “cooler than cool.” I don’t want you to get any illusions that this ornament will provide a definite cooling sensation, but you should be relieved to know that you don’t sleep warm. I didn’t feel too hot while in this topper, and I have a particularly hot dream. So unless you live in a hot region or refuse to run a fan on a hot summer night, I think it will be quite comfortable for you.
Like many of the ornaments on this list, Layla’s ornament will add two inches to the height of your existing bed. It’s definitely on the soft side of the spectrum, so I repeat: Side sleepers, this is definitely for you! It will make your firm mattress feel soft and your soft mattress feel even softer.
I also love how it comes with a sleeve and I appreciate the detail in the hexagonal honeycomb pattern. Although you will probably cover it with your sheets, it is pretty enough to do without it if you really wanted to. It also pairs perfectly with the Layla mattress if you sleep on one!
A double-size Layla ornament sells for $ 199 and goes up to $ 399 for a California king.
There are many benefits to a natural latex foam topper, including the fact that it is made from non-toxic, sustainably sourced materials. Birch Plush Organic Cotton and Latex Topper is also hypoallergenic and antimicrobial, so mold, bacteria, fungi and other household allergens cannot accumulate inside. It also allows more airflow than typical memory foam or polyethylene foam trim, thanks to perforations in the foam.
The birch topper is three inches thick, made with a slab of certified organic latex, soft organic wool, and an organic cotton cover. That means it is non-toxic and does not contain harsh chemicals like VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and flame retardants. It is also handmade in California.
It feels super bouncy, supportive and flexible. The birch trim bounces immediately when you take the pressure off and you sit more on top of the cape than on the inside. I would rate the birch topper around a firm medium to firm on the scale, or around a seven to eight – it’s definitely firm and is probably best for people who want their bed to feel more solid. I would even call it the best firm mattress topper on the market.
Natural and organic products are not necessarily cheap, but consider the extra care it took to get to the final product and you can see the value.
A double-size birch ornament sells for $ 300 and goes up to $ 550 for a California king.
For a Prime Shipping Topper, check out the Linenspa Two-Inch or Three-Inch Thick Topper. Both trims (which are identical except for thickness) have over 50,000 reviews on Amazon and boast a 4.5 out of 5-star rating. For the price, you would have to agree with most sleepers.
Depending on the size you choose, you will get a soft memory foam feel or a different one. The three-inch option is smooth and will feel more luxurious, while the 2-inch model feels a a bit business. When you press your whole hand into the foam, it takes a few seconds for it to return to its original shape. Ultimately it will come down to the money you want to spend and the soft mattress profile you want.
The Linenspa mattress topper is covered in tiny blue beads that promote heat distribution throughout the mattress topper, rather than allowing your body heat to build up around your abdomen and warm you while you sleep. It doesn’t sleep cool, but it’s better than a traditional memory foam topper.
Now, let’s go to one of the best parts of the Linenspa ornament. Prices start at $ 40 for a two-inch twin model and go up to $ 80 for a California king size.
If you like clean, white, and luxurious-looking styling, then you might appreciate the ViscoSoft Serene Hybrid topper. It is called a hybrid because it has two different parts; the 2.5-inch and 1.5-inch memory foam slab of an alternative down pillow top. You get the best of both worlds: a supportive base and a fluffy top coat.
I really like this topper because I don’t love the feel of memory foam, and the fluffy alternate down layer neutralizes the feel so it doesn’t respond as slowly or snuggle like traditional things. Also, the pillowcase is made from satin and has 300 thread count, so it feels super soft and smooth to the touch.
The cover completely wraps around the memory foam board and runs all the way to the bottom of the mattress, where it sits on the bottom as you would a fitted sheet. That way it stays on your mattress and won’t slide off if you tend to toss and turn in bed.
Another advantage of the cover, in addition to its comfort, is that it is machine washable. Remove the straps, take out the memory foam layer inside, and throw it into the washing machine. Just make sure to wash in cold water and tumble dry.
ViscoSoft currently offers up to a 40% discount on all its trimmings. Prices start at $ 150 for a twin and go up to $ 220 for a California king.
