This lovely 98-year-old woman’s name is Mary Tony. American lives alone in his little house and tries to be happier to spend their days. The sunlight, the wind blowing through leaves, birds chirping in the trees in the garden — this everyday routine Esmeraldas caused Mary an irresistible longing.
Soon everything changed. Mary started to go to the local center for the elderly where she could easily forget about his sadness for a few hours. But this time it was different — in the center of the film crew came. During the filming of Mary feel special, with genuine laughter expressing their emotions.
The staff made every effort to brighten the lives of older people. “When they leave home and come more the next day, because they are no more, I try to hope that the last day of his life were spent in joy,” — said the employee of the center. When journalists asked her why this work seems so important to her, she simply replied, “They are real people. They need care. And they are not less important than others who are younger”.
One day, when the bus once again took Mary out of the house, her eyes were still big sadness — the loneliness left her indelible mark. The crew asked what she usually does during the day. “What should I do? Where would I go? Am I the only one. I can’t hear. Not see. I can’t live with my nieces — they have their families, ‘ she replied with a sigh. Every night I look forward to the next morning again to go to the center. I like it very much. But on Saturdays and Sundays nobody is there”.
Broken voice Mary told what she does during those two long days: “I take advertising journals and ditch their pages into strips. Then I cut these strips into small pieces, throw them in a paper bag, and then in the trash. I have to do something, otherwise I’ll go crazy.”
Knowing this, the staff of the centre could not hold back tears: “I never even thought. After work I go home, back to his normal life. I never asked what they do at home.” But for Mary, loneliness is not a reason to feel sorry for yourself: “How many 98-year old still can stand firmly on its feet? I can. I will continue to do so”.
This weekend Mary had guests from the center. When they left, she stood in the door, seeing through their eyes. “Thank you for coming. You’ve given me a wonderful day and I will never forget,” said an elderly woman who visibly blossomed from the attention from others.
Attention, kisses and hugs — all these Mary cherishes more than anything. She knows that is worth to live this life, and that really is priceless. The care, kindness and love — without them, we wouldn’t do and step towards life. That is why it is so important to give older people, perhaps in their last days. Maybe it’s your casual smile to brighten their day, brighten it with hope and leave sorrow behind. Take care of elders.
