“Between January 1 and December 7, 617,197 deaths occurred in 2020”, specifies the National Institute of Statistics, which had identified 613,243 for the whole of 2019, a record since the end of World War II due to the growth and aging of the population. As of December 7, 46,703 more deaths than last year on the same date had been recorded.

Covid-19 has killed three times as many hospital deaths as the classic seasonal flu, according to an Inserm study unveiled on Friday. Published in the medical journal The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, this study is based on data from over 135 000 French patients. The researchers compared the spring of 2020 with the 2018-2019 influenza season, “the worst of the last five years in France in terms of the number of deaths”.
