  • Listen to the interview of the columnist for the Journal de Québec, Karine Gagnon with Jonathan Trudeau at QUB Radio:

According to the councillor Sylvie Falardeau, who was very close to the mayor for over thirty years, Mr. Loranger was taken by ambulance to a hospital Wednesday because he was not feeling well. He was transferred during the day at the university Institute of cardiology and pneumology of Quebec (IUCPQ). His heart, however, has failed in the night from Wednesday to Thursday.

“It is a great loss”

“It is very difficult for me. It was me that went that night with his wife, said Ms. Falardeau. They tried to unclog his arteries, but there was nothing to do. It is a great loss to the City of L’ancienne-Lorette. Since January, he worked really hard. We had been obliged to tell him a time to calm down a bit, but Emile is an intense, you know, it’s all or nothing,” she says in an interview.

The flags of the city hall and near the municipal buildings were lowered to half-mast. Aged 73 years, the mayor Loranger was chairman, on Tuesday evening, by videoconference, the last regular meeting of the city council. Since the beginning of the year, these sessions were particularly difficult because of disputes with his opponents at city hall.

Councillor Charles Guérard said he is “in shock” Thursday. “We had a session on Tuesday…I never thought that he would have been able to leave us this week. It happened so fast. Despite our differences of opinion, Mr. Loranger was a proud Lorettain and he leaves a great legacy to our city. I offer all my condolences to his family and to his family.”

A politician going for it

Character’s colourful and controversial, known for his pugnacity and his straight-talking, Émile Loranger had made the headlines on several occasions in the last year because of his actions. He had been subject to a suspension of 60 days for breaches of ethics.

Mr. Loranger had since several years the biggest battle of his political career, is that against the urban agglomeration of Québec. Accusing the City of Quebec to overcharge the demerged municipalities with their share for the services of the city, it had won the first round in superior Court.

It will eventually never seen the conclusion of this case since the legal saga will be shown before the Court of appeal in 2021. Despite his age, he did not seek a tenth term as mayor in 2021, in order to bring this fight to an end.

The subject of this crusade, which could bring in tens of millions to Lorettains, the City reiterates in its press release that Emile Loranger has always acted “in the best interest of his fellow citizens, which he placed always at the heart of its decisions.”

Tribute of several politicians

Messages of sympathy were not long in coming. Despite their strained relationship, due to their many clashes over the years, the mayor of Quebec city Régis Labeaume has reacted quickly by way of a press release, offering to its close, members of council and City staff offered their condolences.

“The death of Émile Loranger saddens us deeply. The Quebec city region loses a politician who has always had at heart the success of the development of the City of L’ancienne-Lorette and the quality of life of its citizens. It will have marked the political history of the region,” said Governed Labeaume.

On Twitter, the conservative mp Gérard Deltell has also offered to relatives and to the family of Mr. Loranger its condolences, noting that he has served the citizens of L’ancienne-Lorette “for nearly 40 years”, an exceptional longevity.

“In the name of the Parti québécois, I wish to present to his family and loved ones our sincere condolences”, added the acting head of the PQ, Pascal Bérubé. The minister of municipal Affairs, Andrée Laforest, also relayed a message of sympathy to his relatives in the late morning on the social networks.

Several other members of the National Assembly and the federal minister Jean-Yves Duclos have also offered their condolences to the family and relatives of Mr. Loranger.

The mayor of Lévis, Gilles Lehouillier, has also been called upon to respond to the death of the mayor Loranger during a press conference in the morning on Thursday. “I can’t say that I was well acquainted with Mr. Loranger. What is sure, is that this is a mayor who was stuck on its population. He had at heart the citizen. It was his concern. This is what explains its longevity”, he expressed.

The City of Saint-Augustin, has emphasized his involvement and his dedication to his fellow citizens since 1983.
