The presidents of Tajikistan and Sri Lanka: the Creation of the intergovernmental Commission is a timely step

The President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon held a meeting with head of the Republic of Sri Lanka Maitripala Sirisena. The head of the island nation arrived in Dushanbe to attend the Summit of conference on interaction and confidence building measures in Asia (CICA), the Agency “Khovar”.

The presidents noted that the establishment of the joint intergovernmental Commission for economic, trade and scientific-technical cooperation is a timely step towards achieving mutually beneficial goals.

In the framework of foreign policy of Tajikistan pays “constant attention to the strengthening of friendly relations with the developing South Asian region, including Sri Lanka,” – said Rahmon.

The leaders of the republics considered the issues of cooperation in the hydropower industry, pharmaceuticals, textile industry, processing of wool and leather. The parties also discussed the creation of joint ventures for the extraction of precious stones, development of major transport infrastructure projects, development of tourism. Special attention was paid to combating terrorism, organised transnational crime and drug trafficking.

We will remind, on 15 June in Dushanbe will host the Fifth summit of the conference on interaction and confidence building measures in Asia (CICA) under the chairmanship of Tajikistan. The idea on creation of CICA in 1992, has offered the Republic of Kazakhstan. The activities of the forum aimed at strengthening relations and cooperation of Asian States in order to ensure stability and security in the Central Asian region. Sri Lanka is one of the 27 member countries of CICA.
