Republic of Macedonia officially changed its name to Northern Macedonia.
Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia officially became the North of Macedonia, informs Rus.Media.
Prespanska of the agreement between the two countries about changing the name of Macedonia entered into force. This was announced by the Deputy foreign Minister of Greece Giorgos Katrougalos.
“Begins a new era of stability and cooperation with North Macedonia”, – he said.
Foreign Minister of Macedonia Nikola Dimitrov said that this deal could be the beginning of a long friendship between Greece and Northern Macedonia.
“We can’t change the past, but we can, we will shape our future friendship, partnership and cooperation,” he said.
The name Macedonia coincides with the name of the region in Northern Greece. Countries over 20 years could not agree on a new name for the former Yugoslav Republic. Renaming should also help Macedonia to join NATO and the European Union.
17 June 2018 on the shores of lake Prespa power of Greece and Macedonia signed an agreement according to which Athens promised not to block the attempts of the former Yugoslav Republic to join the organizations in exchange for the name change.
Against the renaming of Macedonia was made by the local nationalists. However, during the referendum, more than 90 percent of the country supported the initiative.
